I wonder if anyone's attempted to argue the regression, viz, the claim that this was possible because Mary's parents were themselves conceived without original sin, and so on, all the way up the family tree. I guess the regression terminates in Adam and Eve, which rather buggers up original sin.
Yes. The "Immaculate Conception" refers to Mary being conceived without original sin.

There is something systematic about this it seems to me - a collapse not just of individual or institutional courage but of assurance that the state, legal system, media, or public will back you up if you take a stand. Organisations cave in when liabilities cross a certain threshold.

Have always been adamant that PP's books *must* retain their garish original covers, because part of the fun was getting people who would never read a book with a cover like that to have a go, and watching them get completely beguiled. But this is beautiful enough that...maybe it's time
