No fixing some hearts, I guess.

Lynch's work better than many so clearly understands that beneath the idealized nostalgia for "real" America is a teeming nightmare of violence and cosmic horror that rests just under the facade of picket fences and suburban homes.

"What can oppose the decline of the west is not a resurrected culture but the utopia that is silently contained in the image of its decline."

Love this line by Adorno, as quoted in this truly brilliant essay by Jacob Blumenfeld:

An extended reflection on Hoop's stellar early work. I feel like we barely broke the surface on this one, but I picked it, so ive bias. We hardly got to even mention his work on the Peter Paul and Mary tour documentary!

What does he sing, running through the mud of Europe, while stamping on the hands of his now dead comrades? He sings an old Schubert song from happier times called “The Linden Tree.”

I consider Fascination to fall under the Gothic Marxism genre popularized by @thelitcritguy.bsky.social and a good example of Blochian optimism for the proletariat's prospects because the main dude was able to choose class solidarity in the end over being drained dry by smoking hot French vampires.

a key reason they see an opening for such a blatant speech crackdown is that they already did one to Palestinian and anti-genocide activists and it got enthusiastic bipartisan approval
