Like today when we talked about Euros (the currency) and the Turkish Lira.

a fortunate quirk is that doing food and medical support for impoverished children, foreign and domestic, *also* is about the biggest bang it is possible to get for our buck.

so you can analyze aid on a moral basis or a realpolitik basis and you get the same answer: we should do it

Here's the thing. I am a lucky person and pay a fair bit in taxes. I can think of no better use for my tax dollars than feeding children, because I think all people are equally deserving of basic humanity.

The elimination of USAID is a moral atrocity and all involved made a choice to enable, and then lie about, ending the lives of some of the most vulnerable people in the world.

MAE SOT, Thailand (AP) - Mohammed Taher clutched the lifeless body of his 2-year-old son and wept. Ever since his family's food rations stopped arriving at their internment camp in Myanmar in April, the father had watched helplessly as his once-vibrant baby boy weakened, suffering from diarrhea and begging for food.
On May 21, exactly two weeks after Taher's little boy died, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio sat before Congress and declared: "No one has died" because of his government's decision to gut its foreign aid program. Rubio also insisted: "No children are dying on my watch."
That, Taher says, "is a lie."

Also people sure did not find Kamala Harris building a broad democracy defending coalition emotionally satisfying.

On the bright side there’s only one or two more Prime Days before AI nukes this source of revenue.

Of course as with every other source of revenue digital revenue loses its replaced by more or less absolutely nothing.

twice a year the entire U.S. press becomes a marketing extension of a single billionaire-owned retailer, and nobody in any position of editorial power thinks it's weird or gross

The most bipartisan impeachment trial in history.

I mean they could have impeached him.

Nobody really wants to hear this but the Republican Party as it existed in 2016 was a meaningful check on the style of Trumpism we’re seeing now.

The Republican Party of 2024 has been close to entirely remade in Trump’s image from congress to executive staffing.

more and more I am convinced a good share of why Trump 2 is so much worse than before is because of what Elon did to Twitter. it's like those group chats where people gassed themselves up to join ISIS, scaled up a millionfold

I suspect this is going nowhere. But it sucks people even have to worry about it.

Many are yes but there’s also just like a lot more of them across gov.
themlg.bsky.social
Fwiw the law doesn’t even oblige future congress, it just makes it so future appropriations bills must specify they are not making fed employees whole in order to not make fed employees whole.
themlg.bsky.social
I get what you’re going for here…but more of this will be like janitorial staff, daycare workers at military bases, mailmen, etc etc.

Obviously Palestinians are far and away the primary victims of Israel's genocidal war undertaken in the wake of the October 7, 2023 attacks. And no one should take that away. But there is a part of me furious at the Israeli government for stealing away my ability to just grieve as a Jew.

Yeah. Shutdown means gov employees get furloughed but “excepted” officials continue to work without getting paid (sometimes in the event of long shutdowns offices will rotate who gets excepted). Here they’re threatening to stiff furloughed folks, though they had been threatening to fire them so.
themlg.bsky.social
(Lots bad here but this isn’t my wife, she’s not furloughed, she’s working while not getting paid).
themlg.bsky.social
1. This is bullshit. In previous shutdowns furloughed employees have been made whole but after the last Trump shutdowns, congress, anticipating a future admin might try and stiff ‘em, passed a bipartisan law requiring it.

2. In a week they’ve gone from threatening to RIF furloughed workers to this.
atrupar.com
Johnson: "It's true that in previous shutdowns, many or most furloughed employees have been paid for the time they were furloughed, but there is new legal analysis - I don't know the details, I just saw a headline - but there are some legal analysts saying that might not be appropriate or necessary"

6 y.o.: “Mommy how do you spell buttface??”

Mommy [completely unphased and without missing a beat]: “Honey if you want to spell butt stuff you will need to learn go spell for yourself.”

6 y.o. [thinks it over]: “Mommy, how do you spell cute waffle?”

Parenting ladies and gentlemen.
