Way back on the radio dial, a fire got lit inside a bright-eyed child. Stat guy, office manager, recovering broadcaster, sports nerd.
I’m going to guess that that was the first college football conference championship game decided by an interception after a toss from a running back on a first-down snap from the 40 in overtime.

Rodgers’ red, bloodied nose led the Steelers to turn to Rudolph, because of course it did.

Pro tip: Milan High School, whose 1954 state title run was the basis for “Hoosiers,” is in Indiana, not Italy. They pronounce it “MY-len.” Put the pronunciation in your prompter or people in this part of the world will notice.

This is from a tennis account, yes, but as a lifelong baseball fan … it isn’t wrong.
The constant spitting in baseball is truly repugnant

While we're querying, how often do we get positionless* ABs like the one Kiner-Falefa had in the sixth?

(*Pinch-hitter or pinch-runner whose spot comes up again in the same inning before he has a chance to assume a defensive position)
Someone with better @retrosheet.bsky.social skills than me is going to need to look up the last batted-ball 315 putout... with or without the FC involved.

The Pre- and Post-Cold Pizza era.
If you are like 25 or older, you remember ESPN doing something with sports that enriched your enjoyment, nourished your knowledge, and made you excited about being a sports fan. So what’s turned not only sucks, it feels like a betrayal

If you’re under the age of let’s say 20, it’s just always stunk
Sports fans really hate ESPN so much. It’s crazy. And not just online, it’s everyone.

While we're doing pedantry around here, the NBA refers to the free throws awarded when your opponent has exhausted its foul quota as "penalty" free throws. That situation is described as "in the penalty." The word "bonus" does not appear anywhere in the NBA rulebook.
Things that annoy me and possibly nobody else: NBC’s scorebug said “Referees Zach Zarba, Eric Dalen, Jason Goldberg.” Only one of those is the referee.

The last time the Blue Jays won the pennant, Greg Gumbel was the play-by-play announcer.

Anyone out there have a list of MLB at bats that have involved multiple replay reviews?

(This is niche, but not any more niche than the time George Moriarty split his pants behind home plate, and that's been logged.)

Couple of notes from latest update of the Kernel Matrix, which tracks every MLB (AL/NL/FL) score since 1901...

WSH 15 @ MIA 7 (Mon 9/8)... 106th occurrence, second this season (SEA @ DET on 7/12). 15-7, 15-8 and 15-9 have all happened in 2025, but 15-0, 15-4, 15-5 and 15-6 have not.

Michiana will be getting the Colts game on CBS (stunning) with the Andrew Catalon crew and the lead DH games of NYG-WSH and GB-DET.

506 Sports Patreon subscribers (www.patreon.com/506Sports?ut...) get to see the preliminary map before it goes live. Much easier than mailing bribes to New Brunswick.

Happy 89th anniversary to the George Moriarty Trousers Incident.
Moriarty played 14 years in MLB and was well-regarded as an umpire after that. But on this day he bent over to dust off the plate and, to quote the Cleveland Plain Dealer ...
(This is why they advise umpires to wear black underwear.)

For several years, Doug Kern was the SABR member that I most wanted to meet in person, but he passed away in 2022.

While still with us, Doug had a devoted following for many reasons, one of which was his Every Score Ever matrix.

I couldn't make it to #sabr53, so today I revived and updated that.

I don’t know what this has to do with anything, but since it’s not like that has ever stopped me from posting before, it just dawned on me that the numbers used to spell my first name on a traditional phone keypad are the years of the two Mets World Series titles. But not in chronological order.

Bruce Bochy told his players he was going to the SABR convention. They asked “What does that stand for—sandwiches and baseball?” “No,” he said. “It stands for people who know more about your career than you do.”

The Pacers had three offensive team rebounds in the first two minutes. I have no idea what that means in the grand scheme of things, but I noticed it because I think about team rebounds.

Bigger issue: The Pacers have zero made field goals in the first 3:01.
