An actual hot take: Too many authors are afraid of editors watering down their voice or whatever and not afraid enough of editors letting you put any old slop on the page.

If anyone wants a bit of gently creepy contemporary fantasy this Halloween, The Devil in the Vicarage goes on sale the 30th of October and you can buy it here:

UK: www.amazon.co.uk/Devil-Vicara...
US: www.amazon.com/Devil-Vicara...
Promo card for The Devil in the Vicarage with the artwork and cover copy: Something bad lurks in the leafy heart of Surrey. Well yes, obviously there’s Guildford, but that’s not what I...

Okay, fine – there’s another horror lurking in the depths of Surrey. When I receive a cryptic phone call one morning, it’s my new life as a gentlewoman-wizard calling. The Carnells may be unpopular and almost extinct, but apparently one of us still has a duty.

My destination? Winterfold Vicarage in the village of Cranleigh. My task? Unknown, but how could sending me of all people to a vicarage possibly go badly? Yes, obviously apart from me being slightly possessed by a devil?

Today is a day when arts degrees are worthless, but the product of those degrees is so valuable it would kill an entire industry if they were made to pay for it.

Huh, it's been a while since I've seen someone effectively say "oh ebooks/audio don't count the way print books do when it comes to reversion"
tomlloydwrites.bsky.social
Yeah, I'm trying to use the analogy of fast fashion to make my point. It's a choice you need to own if you make it and the judgement of others is what you need to put up with. People saying small businesses need it for copy or whatever because they're pressed for time and money... still gotta own it
tomlloydwrites.bsky.social
yes, Tom, what you really need to do is get into multiple arguments about whether it's fair to shame people over their use of AI...

Feels very much of the times that people are just complaining others make them feel bad about their actions.

*deep sigh* Again, I have an English degree and have contributed rather extensively to the British economy, including writing a show that pumped £10 million into Wales. But the stupidity is the point here, of course.

Badenoch and Co see education only as a means to a massive income in some soul destroying career.

Devoid of imagination and the power of knowledge they view life entirely through the prism of the CV.

My advice always is to study what interests you and the rest will follow

I miss the days when higher education was seen as a social good, a national treasure. When the social, cultural and intellectual contribution of higher education was valued as highly as economic contribution. When students from poorer backgrounds had proper financial support. When the humanities 1/

Same, with a dozen pages left it was turning into a seriously bleak trilogy I thought!

Maybe worth pointing out that locations where bad stuff happens tend to be entirely made up by me. I don't need emails from people asking why I've described their home as a murder house or hellmouth etc!

Hah, well this may be perfect for them then!

personally I hate most of the videos and just want the information written down rather than wait for someone to get through talking to me.

Your reminder that The Green Man's Holiday will be published on 30th October 2025 by Wizard's Tower Press. If you wish, you can preorder the book in your preferred format from the retailer of your choice.
Here's an Amazon UK link for the ebook
www.amazon.co.uk/Green-Mans-H...
Cover for The Green Man's Holiday by Juliet E. McKenna. Artwork and layout by Ben Baldwin.

A mysterious animal with very sharp teeth peers out from a hollow in a pile of grey stones. Green foliage and white flowers surround it.

Cover copy reads: When your mother’s a dryad and you’re an only child, you don’t have much experience of big family events. But Daniel Mackmain’s girlfriend, Finele, has a whole load of relatives. They’re all coming to her sister Iris’s wedding. Frankly, Dan’s dreading it. At least plenty of other guests will have connections to the supernatural. The bride and groom can turn into swans, for a start.
Since Dan’s still a loner at heart, he and Fin have planned a few days away together afterwards. Just the two of them in a quiet country cottage should be nice and relaxing. Dan should have remembered what folk wisdom says about making plans.

This is a lie.

There are many criticisms you might sensibly and truthfully make of the Sentencing Council and the Sentencing Guidelines. I’ve been making them for years.

But this is an outright lie. Pure fabrication. A fraud on the public.

Ok, novella looks like it'll be 111 print pages. That's a decent length I think.

I see pieces like this a lot, often w/ a spin of lamenting cultural degeneration, but reading is a LABOR issue, it’s declined because so many people are working overtime or two jobs & employers expect after hours work. France has Earth’s highest reading rate b/c long lunch breaks & labor protections

Worse than US tech bros naming everything after Tolkien or Musk constantly referencing Iain M. Banks without apparently having understood a single word.

Just finished the excellent The Damned King by @justinleeanderson.com - by turns twisty and brutal, filled with flawed and broken people trying to do the right thing in the face of overwhelming awfulness - that maybe has a few parallels to present day, given truth matters so little to some.

I really hate doing this, but when I had my breakdown last month, I took two weeks off from work, and they didn't pay me for my time off, and I am broke.

If you find it in your heart to tip even the minimum amount then I would be enternally grateful
