Took a brief break the hell of academia for. Worm.

Finished my first handmade keyboard today! I call it CAPZ 😁 This has been a learning board, meaning I've used it as my test subject for every skill I've learned. I came up with the layout, designed the case in a CAD program, handwired it, and built the firmware. And it works! On the first try!!

some sort of keyboard idea rattled free from my brain

Quickly learning that having an autoimmune condition while getting older means losing a *lot* of time to being sick. It feels like I have less time to do the same things everyone else does because I keep getting fucking sick.

It feels cowardly but I don't see a future where I am still living in this country.

Making up excuses to bomb hospitals is one of Israel’s favourite war crimes, and they’ve gotten away with it every single time. International law has utterly failed.

the start of the school year always comes with the agony of trying to navigate college bureaucracy 🫠

So it seems Google was artificially inflating the amount of storage I was using. I know this because I downloaded everything I had on Google Drive and in Google Photos and then deleted it all to free up my storage. The volume downloaded was somehow greater than the volume deleted??

For context, this is what I'm working on. Every point represents a lithic in the 3D space of the excavation unit! Locations are not exact, but not fully random either. This is one unit out of about 57 in my site.

although in my defense, I work in a 50 year old academic building with single-pane windows with no UV protection, so my stickinotes do get the full force of the sun every day.
It's been so long since I've done data management for my site's GIS project that my stickinotes are faded almost the point of being illegible 😬

Fascinating thread that I'm forever going to use as proof why you should always check the sources your source cites
If you ask someone today to name the builder of Hadrian's Wall, they would give you a funny look. But historical memory is odd, and right up to the 1800s we forgot who built it.

Until in 1840 John Hodgson, an obscure Northumbrian clergyman, published the LONGEST footnote in history... 1/22

can't wait to read this 🙄
Most US universities:

-are dominated by STEM departments (which aren’t lefty)
-are run by neoliberals if not neocons
-have shriveled their humanities programs to little adjunctified raisins
-send cops to bust up leftist protests

Viewpoint diversity!

Should a ‘Diverse’ Campus Mean More Conservatives?
Republicans are demanding colleges embrace “viewpoint diversity.” They aren’t the only ones who are concerned.

I think we arrive at that issue when we see reporting of information as an act of persuasion. You don't need to try as hard to be accurate if you're not actually persuading anyone of a point Weirdly defeatist and forgets that news is for the sake of learning, not being "convinced" of something
I've never understood this weird media belief (repeated many times before this) that criticisms of Trump only matter if his supporters see and believe him. Why would criticisms of Trump only be relevant to his supporters?
OK fine so they're sane-washing him but it doesn't matter because his voters don't read the paper anyway! I have dedicated my life to journalism despite believing it doesn't matter in the slightest. Farhi out.

If you write an article about "undecided voters" and your evidence is quotes from 3 people in a country with 330 million residents, and you chose which people to quote and which people not to quote, that's not giving the voters' opinion, that's giving your opinion.

With the school year looming on the near horizon, I hope more professors this year consider use of AI a form of academic dishonesty.

How dare! Without quartz, humanity would have had infinitely shittier stone tools. I would go so far to say quartz is a mineral that made us as a species! I mean look at the lithic diversity she creates, she IS that bitch! "vanilla" excuse me but every recipe has to have a solid foundation 💅
FYI: If you vote for quartz in #MinCup24, it's an admission that your favorite ice cream flavor is vanilla and you think salt is "spicy".

"he said some states wanted to kill babies after they were born and we fact checked that, but I want to ask about whether he got shot because of dems being mean" what a completely irresponsible handling of that interview. "journalism" yeah right
