And do you think that unto such as you
A maggot-minded, starved, fanatic crew
God gave the secret, and denied it me?
Well, well—what matters it? Believe that, too!

~ Omar Khayyam, The Rubaiyat

Dr. Jane Goodall filmed an interview with Netflix in March 2025 that she understood would only be released after her death.

In America, history is aspirational
jesawyer.bsky.social
It's a weird artifact of (mostly) American journalists copying British journalists despite the fact that most Americans pronounce the "h" in "historic".

People are free to pronounce things however they want, but it sounds strange because it's an uncommon combination of sounds in American English.

“an historic” just feels wrong

Just discovered @whatthefuckjusthappenedtoday.com and even though the news is stressful, the conciseness and clarity with which this site presents it is calming me down again

I'm currently reading Barbara Tuchman's "A Distant Mirror", about the 14thc including precursors to protestantism, and this joke landed for me

i'm not sure if these kinds of things are worse if they're AI bots run increasingly amok to agitate on social media, or if people are really just this basic (p.s. it was a very touching original post, hard agree)

The one on the right (Alyssa Farah) was at my weird tiny Christian nationalist college right around when I met you -- I think I watched a movie with her and a couple other people a few weeks before I got kicked out of there. Odd small world.

An outstanding interview. Patrick Iber of Dissent Magazine has interviewed the legendary Polish political scientist Adam Przeworski about de-democratisation in the USA, and what lessons he’s gleaned from Chile, Peru & beyond.

Iber’s questions are stellar. Przeworski’s answers, chillingly candid.

Yeah kinda weird that people are so uncritical gung ho about promising a future that is either false, or slavery

I came from Kirk's world. It is a standard evangelical dualism to profess love for the targets of their violence, even amidst the act. And their targets aren't going to be recently-ex-Maga white boys with guns like the actual shooter -- they're going to be trans and queer Americans like his partner.

Some pundits praise Erika Kirk for her forgiveness, calling it an example for all. This is witless. One needn’t question the *sincerity* of her statements to do the basic work of reading public politics as such, by asking “what does *she* mean? What do her followers hear?”

“Sincerity” has been the sand trap of American public life for a century. So many conflate it with virtue in itself; so many others, encountering ugly politics, focus on what they then imagine must be their lack of sincerity, rather than the facts of real, sincere, brutality.

korean reporting is nightmarish on the conditions Korean workers were contained in
Their waists and hands were tied together, forcing them to bend down and lick water to drink. The unscreened bathrooms contained only a single sheet to cover their lower bodies. Sunlight barely penetrated through a fist-sized hole, and they were only allowed access to the small yard for two hours. Detained by US immigration authorities for eight days, the workers and their families expressed shock, describing human rights violations and absurdities they could not have imagined as ordinary Koreans living in 2025.

Israel’s double-tap attack on Gaza’s last arguably functional hospital—which killed first responders & 5 journalists—turns out to have been a quadruple-tap strike.

The IDF claimed it attacked the hospital bc Hamas operated a camera there, but provided no evidence for the claim. 🧵

I once listened to an interview where they asked why the truck sim games (ATS, ETS2) are so popular when they just simulate a day job. Answer is that they cut out all of the boring stuff and pay the driver like $200/h, which makes it just smooth and satisfying. Much of art is intentional editing!

This is a poorly framed question. Lots of conservatives would cut off a family member for being LGBT, for example, but that doesn’t clock as a ‘political view’ to them.

Also, the narrative that leftists cut off their conservative family members too easily is extremely widespread on the right.

Sharing this finding: Harris voters are the only group of people remotely likely to say it's OK to cut off friends/family for political views.

I don't think they're *wrong* — again, it's a question of identity. But we're very different from most of America. www.theargumentmag.com/p/when-ameri...
