It's also known for looking extremely Halloweeny in May or so when it gets devoured by tent caterpillars.

Potatober #8: 30 years ago, potatoes became the first vegetables to be grown in space.
A potato floating in space wearing a NASA Snoopy cap, which has a microphone even though the potato has no mouth. It is tethered to an instrument panel.

In honor of Edgar Allan Poe's 176th deathday, here are a few of my recent pieces inspired by Poe's works 🫀
Illustration by Abigail Larson depicting a scene from Edgar Allan Poe's poem "Annabel Lee". Two lovers embrace at the edge of the sea, water splashes around them and the surrounding rocks. A full moon shines over them, and storm clouds loom.
Published in "Sticker Jigsaw: The Edgar Allan Poe Collection" 2024 Macmillan illustration by Abigail Larson of a raven perched on a skull with a teal curtain backdrop illustration by Abigail Larson depicting a scene from Poe's "The Pit and the Pendulum" showing a man restrained as a pendulum blade swings close to him. Rats have swarmed around him, chewing the ropes that hold him down. This illustration is featured in "Sticker Jigsaw: The Edgar Allan Poe Collection" for Macmillan Books. Illustration by Abigail Larson for Macmillan's "Edgar Allan Poe Sticker Jigsaw" book. The illustration is a scene from Edgar Allan Poe's poem, "The Raven". The narrator is at the center of the image looking up at at raven perched above an open doorway. Behind the narrator is a tall window with red curtains, and the ghost of Lenore lurks nearby. A black cat is watching the scene from the lower right corner.

feels like yet again time to mention that the *videogames* industry (that's a creative industry, which people do creative degrees in) brings in more than twice the amount to the British economy as the fishing and steel industries *combined*

I cannot understand what these people think the purpose of human life is?

It is *not* "pursue joy, deal justly, love well, try to understand as much and see as much of this beautiful world and of the deepness, richness and variety of human culture and experience as you can before you die"?

How is this repeatedly made into a policy issue - by *all* parties - when the blunt fact of the matter is that grown adults who are obliged to pay for their own education, and relentlessly pursued to repay their loans, should be able to study whatever the fuck they want.

Potatober #7: The season for adelie penguins to start courting and building nests is approaching.

A potato will be hard to beat with a rock, even a good rock.

For MUCH better adelie drawings, see @twirlynoodle.com.

Try: absolutely nothing, and then go support indie bookstores instead 📚

Oh look everyone's favourite did a Titan (okay, not quite, but if you can see that knowing the properties of fibreglass should have stopped you from taking people on trips in your fibreglass submarine, WELL...)

A screenshot from the conclusion of the linked article: Finally, there is clear evidence that, before sailing towards the Weddell Sea, Shackleton knew that compressive ice loading should be expected, he knew how a ship should be designed for compressive ice, and he knew that Endurance was not that kind of a ship. Shackleton was well aware of the risks related to the strength of Endurance, but chose to use it anyway.

Now look at how much of this 249 year experiment was spent on reinforcing the idea that having money (or appearing to) automatically means you're doing the right things, and it's a lot less staggering all of a sudden.

It really is staggering to see so many people willing to abandon our 249 year experiment in democracy for an increasingly unstable criminally convicted reality show charlatan.

I'm pressing the 'print' button on the cards next Wednesday! Please let me know before then how many you would like, so that you're sure to get them. I'll be shipping them early November, to reach you in time to mail them out before Xmas. Mugs and pins might get shipped before then.
Set of 5 resin and brass pins, showing Scott, Wilson, Bowers, Oates, and the Polar Party. We don't know what happened to the Evans pins. Available singly or as a set. A nicely proportioned bone china mug with the logo of the Scott centenary on it and three coins for scale. An illustration of the Cape Evans Hut under Mt Erebus at night. Superimposed on it is the first verse of Christina Rossetti's 'In the Bleak Midwinter' formatted to look like a Gothic Revival prayer card. Mockup of two midwinter cards, one the 'bleak midwinter' illustration and the other a colour illustration of the Midwinter Tree from June 1911.

Potatober #6: For the excellent person who told me they dreamt of (nearly) adopting a sad terrier with a literal potato body.

I bet it would have been a good dog.
A dog that is a lumpy potato body with a sad, shaggy yorkshire terrier like head, with a little bow on its head.

I wish I'd enjoyed it half as much as eating crisps. So annoyed that such great actors had such a poor script to work with. I might've stuck with it if I'd cared about any character. If you can't get me emotionally involved after a full hour of screen time then you don't deserve my attention.

My parents rented Titanic when it came out on video (they had seen it in the cinema and wanted to have family movie night, sans car scene) and I got so bored I went and did website maintenance until the iceberg showed up.

I find both The Goonies and Game Of Thrones deeply, even irritatingly, boring. I've given both a try and had to give up. I guess that's either end of the cultural references for my generation.

Inspired by a post I just saw in which someone admitted they hadn’t seen a single episode of Friends nor the film Love Actually… what cultural hole do you have that’s a bit weird for your generation?

I’ll go first: I haven’t seen Dirty Dancing.

Potatober #5: a potato flower, from (short-term) memory. They're far more delicate and crinkly than this, but I got the general shape right!

And I highly recommend looking at potato flowers: they're very pretty.

Religious extremism isn’t about Bible stories or faith in a god, it ‘s about manipulation via power & obedience - no point arguing against those using ideas of Jesus - they don’t give a toss about Jesus - similarly, many terrorists are more driven by being abusive men than any religious texts

Apparently if you try to live properly and get a full night's sleep, work out 3-4 times a week, keep your apartment clean, cook your meals, and maybe try to see friends 1-2 times a week, that takes up pretty much all your time outside of work.
