Musician/writer/pop culture junkie. Probably way too invested in things. May contain traces of socialism.

The scale of the protests in Iran are absolutely unbelievable. Hard to quantify, but I've seen some speculation that this uprising is more significant than the 2023 protests (themselves the largest challenge to the regime since it came into power in '79.)

stfu, walz.

the ICE murderer didn't do what he did out of fear. it's the opposite. he did it because he wasn't afraid. he knew there would be no consequences. that's why law enforcement always feels comfortable doing this.

cops should be afraid of us. make them afraid.

The US Gestapo is now murdering people in the streets unprovoked.

I have a hunch that this is not going to go well for them (and it shouldn't).

My backlog of Blu-Rays and games is getting irresponsibly huge at this point.

So I think this year I will give up preemptively trying to keep up with new releases and get to work on my pile of shame.

Corporate media is doing their usual thing of whitewashing imperialism.

Meanwhile Donald Trump just outright says that they kidnapped Maduro to steal the oil.
BBC journalists have been banned from describing the kidnapped Venezuelan leader as having been kidnapped.

The BBC News Editor has sent this to BBC journalists.

It doesn't matter if your country is ruled by a despotic dictator or a purring kitten that farts rainbows: If you don't let the US have all your resources, they will try to overthrow your government - for decades if they have to.
It is important to understand that what happened in Venezuela did not happen in a vacuum

US media has refused to cover the material and historical factors that led up to the US's special military operation, because if it did, public opinion would be even more negative towards its actions

Remember: The complexity of human rights and international law increases proportionally with how much we agree with them being violated.

That's why Russia's invasion of Ukraine is an unacceptable & unprovoked act of war, while Gaza or Venezuela are complex issues with layered history.

"Maduro is a brutal authoritarian dictator," I wisely intone, as the corrupt demented paedophile US President violating Constitutional Law while operating a gestapo and concentration camps illegally arrests a foreign leader on charges which read like they were written on a paper placemat in crayon.

It's worth reading the whole interview in full. It basically verifies that the NYT has spent the past decade-plus doubling down on top-down narratives for coverage, getting more intense over time.

Sulzberg personally picked & chose whom the news apparatus would target and whom it would kiss up to.
In this in-depth interview Billie Jean Sweeney — a former editor at The New York Times — details how the paper shifted towards openly promoting anti-trans hatred, why this was directed from the very top, how some staff pushed back and the immense damage done by the NYT legitimizing bigotry.

Since a lot of people are posting their Letterboxd 2025 films rankings, here's mine.

I've seen 40 films so far, but a lot of films also aren't out yet in Germany. So maybe I'll post an update in like 4ish months.

I've had such a journey with these movies. From dislike, to begrudging respect, to genuine love.

I've always described Avatar as the last 90's movie - for better and worse.

This is a guy with all the money in the world, trying to convey his world view warts and all.
The fact that the big lesson in the film is the kids convincing their parents and the stubborn whale court that violence against their oppressors to prevent genocide is justified and morally correct is fascinating! I wish I could watch it without wondering about James’ thoughts on the Lakota people!
