Thrilled to finally share my interview with Clayton Farris, who plays Terry in Weapons, where he acts in one of the year’s most memorable scenes. He filled me in on the joys of working with Amy Madigan and why every actor deserves a great horror movie death: ursulams.substack.com/p/it-was-lik...

As per tradition, hubs and I are watching Christmas movies all day, so this is the reminder that Die Hard and Batman Returns are Christmas movies that integrate the holiday into their plots.

For those who don’t know, I’m a huge Top Gun fan. Yes, I understand the beef some people have with the film, but idc. Even made it my mission to visit Kansas City Barbecue when I visited San Diego earlier this year.

The most precious commodity you have is your attention. You don’t have to waste it on poor-faith debates or arguments with strangers if you don’t think they’ll be productive. You can prioritize the things that matter to you and make your life richer.

I find it moving that David Lynch loved IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE so much he couldn't talk about it without crying. His sincere belief in the redemptive possibilities contained in that film and what it said about people seems to me like a key element of understanding his own work.

Less confident writers (including myself back in the day) get super hung up on writing advice and the idea that there's a precise way to do stuff in order to be published. This isn't true. That said, you do have to know what you're doing before you can fuck around
what is your least favorite piece of writing advice and why? 👀

The banned 60 Minutes episode about the CECOT torture prison used by the Trump admin is now exploding across the internet. Be sure to watch so you can see the excellent reporting done by Sharyn Alfonsi & her team at 60 Minutes:
And now someone has uploaded a version that wasn't filmed off a TV.

There's also the torrent link there, which is probably the fastest way to download the 60 Minutes segment on CECOT if you want to save the file locally to your computer.

I offered some words on Leonardo DiCaprio, who’s among my perennial favorites and has been having an incredible career run, playing aging characters trying to come to terms with a changing world. I love him dearly. I’d give him all the awards for his ONE BATTLE AFTER ANOTHER performance. ♥️
We asked our regular contributors to pick a performance this year they loved, and the results capture the diversity of genre, tone, and even acting styles in the art form. Consider this a snapshot of the great acting of 2025:
