Why do we still know so little about pregnancy? Claire Richards and Lana McClements write about their Nature Communications paper, explaining why sampling early placental tissue is risky, and how the world’s first bioprinted placenta organoids can help. #Academicsky 🧪
Designer homes for mini-placentas: A bioprinted solution
Mini placentas can be grown in the lab to study pregnancy and complications like preeclampsia. Using 3D printing technology, we have bioprinted the first placental organoids and studied the impact of their environment on cell behaviour.

A careful, comprehensive and creative characterization of T cell dynamics in response to pathogens, with all credits going to @rohamparsa.bsky.social who just opened his lab!

Excited to share our new preprint! We studied how T cells are functionally & clonally shaped across organs over time. With the new TRACK mice, we genetically label recently activated T cells with tdTomato and track their migration across tissues. #immunology #science www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...

I loved seeing the story from @iannaconelab.bsky.social presented live! HBV-infected hepatocytes can prime CD8 cells directly but CD4 help -> Kupffer cells (not DCs) -> CD27 is needed to prevent dysfunction (check episode #109 of @immunologypodcast.com for the full story!)

Bittersweet farewell weeks at @kiroxford.bsky.social, a place pivotal to my growth as an independent scientist. With deep gratitude for this chapter, I'm thrilled to begin the next at @unibas.ch @biomedizin.unibas.ch, where my lab will study organelle inheritance in T cells in the context of ageing.

Drs. @valentinavenzin.bsky.social, @cristianbeccaria.bsky.social, and the @iannaconelab.bsky.social identified the molecular and cellular mechanisms by which CD4⁺ #Tcells can restore antiviral CD8⁺ T cell function in the #liver.

White text on a black background:

For me, the most inspiring part was seeing how many women are now leading the field of cancer research. I’ve attended conferences before, but this time, it felt different; there was a strong presence of women not just as attendees, but as keynote speakers, session chairs, and award recipients. It made me pause and realize how much the landscape is changing. As a young woman in science, it felt both empowering and motivating. It reminded me that we’re not just contributing, we’re also shaping the future of this field in a real and visible way.

Thrilled to share our latest publication 😃! Beyond the science and the new paths it opens, working with you @valentinavenzin.bsky.social has been one of the most beautiful and transformative journeys of my life. So proud of what we built together with the whole lab! Hope you enjoy it!

11/ Kudos to @valentinavenzin.bsky.social‬, @cristianbeccaria.bsky.social, all members of the @iannaconelab.bsky.social&collaborators for charting this intrahepatic circuit. Expect Kupffer cell licensing and IL 27 to enter conversations on cancer immunotherapy, vaccines and beyond. Thoughts welcome!

On my last day in the lab, my PhD work comes out, all wrapped up🔥proud to say that this paper was really just like playing together and having fun with you, @cristianbeccaria.bsky.social. Seeing it published is simply the conclusion of a journey that was so much more than just a discovery 🌈

1/ 🚨 Hot off the press in Nature Immunology: CD4⁺ T cells can license Kupffer cells to rescue dysfunctional CD8⁺ T cells in the liver. Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection is just the proving ground—this is a paradigm shift in tissue immunity. www.nature.com/articles/s41... 🧵(1/11)
