I go with write FROM what you know. Even full-on fantasy needs grounding in life experience. If I stuck to what I knew, I’d writing stories about working in publishing, and there’s more than enough of that nonsense.

I had a teacher who reversed that and said "Know what you write." Like if you're writing about Elizabethan England, you don't need to already be an expert, just do some research beyond reading Shakespeare and watching Elizabeth. Research is one of the fun parts anyway. I found that much more useful.

I love Steam, I really do, but they've always been insane about banning and rejecting visual novels for no reason at all. VNs are one of my favorite storytelling mediums. It hurts to see Valve repeat the same mistakes and find new and unusual ways to fumble that bag.
