GUYS I JOINED A BIRDWATCHING CLASS. I feel like I'm getting a jump on all the hobbies people take up after they retire.

Currently at:
— only buy tech too old to have AI built in
— painstakingly disable AI every time they add it to something that used to work perfectly well
— if it can't be switched off, abandon the platform or tool
— if there are no good alternatives, avoid the AI parts
— patiently wait for the crash

The Democrats ran, among other things, on democracy being under threat in the 2024 election and they were clearly right. They should act like they were right, not that they were wrong because they lost at one particular moment in time. Trump considers them an internal enemy, not a minority party

#OneBattleAfterAnother is SO GOOD. (Also, an interesting pairing with #Eddington from earlier this year. And maybe, uh, #HowToBlowUpAPipeline.)

There's a particular frustration in having a coupon for a free thing and then discovering that thing isn't for sale anywhere in your surrounding area.

Hi Internet! I'm Drew and THIS IS MY FACE.

If this GIF has ever brought you joy in the past, I humbly ask you to consider making a donation to the National MS Society. It would mean a lot to me and to those I know affected by the disease!

This is Annie. She freaking loves fall. 13/10 (FB: James Osborne)
a small brown dog leaps up from behind a pile of crunchy brown leaves. her eyes and mouth are open wide, and her big floppy ears are extended out like wings to either side.

[1] it was not²
[2] if it was, no-one could prove it³
[3] even if someone could prove it, is it a crime to appreciate a succulent footnote?⁴
[4] in some principalities, it is in fact a crime to enjoy a succulent footnote, particularly if that footnote is not so much a footnote as it is a human liver
a 2 star review reading "gratuitous use of footnotes"

Covid is gonna shape American politics for years and years because it was the first time most Americans were asked to make sacrifices and they lost their minds because of it.

That's kinda the vibe of so many folks I grew up near (South Texas) of the older generations.

They legitimately were changed by the COVID chaos. They went from being like, generous Christians to being locked inside their giant homes screeching about Fauci.

It is continually disturbing to me that, because I have not partnered up and garnered children, a good slice of the people in my life will never really believe me to be a full adult with valid opinions.

Anytime someone frames AI use as a neutral act, guaranteed the language used will be anything but. It always operates from the place of incorporation. If there are levels to use, there are no levels to not use it. Only the pro side gets nuance.

Why?
Why should parents and children "use AI together?"
Why not make an ethical choice not to use it together?
Why is the implicit and explicit message always "you must use it, there is no other option"
Use AI together
Since the technology is still evolving, parents are often learning about it alongside their children. Ying Xu, an assistant professor at the Harvard Graduate School of Education, who researches AI, says parents can use this as an opportunity to explore it together.

for decades, the entire immigration "controversy", the whole industry of pundits etc, has been about creating conditions in which some people, not incidentally non-white people, could be made to work for less. (Same with student loans.) Articles like this act like that's okay.

Farmers in deep-red Pennsylvania are struggling to find workers. They're pushing lawmakers to move faster on a farm labor solution, even as Trump cracks down on immigration.

“We need people to do the jobs Americans are too spoiled to do," said one farmer and three-time Trump voter.
