2/ I interpret someone saying "this is not who we are" in the face of something horrific as meaning some combination of:

a) This is not in line with the story we tell about ourselves;
b) This is an abberation and not something that happens in America;
c) The average American does not support this.

Some are born sociopaths, some achieve sociopathology, and some have sociopathicness thrust upon them.

And if it wasn't people who's physical appearance was different it would be people who dressed the wrong way, like the wrong music, are the wrong sex, or some other excuse.

They want to hurt minorities until their lives improve, which will never happen. They need to be told they're wrong about the cause of their problems, not have their delusions catered to.
