There is a reasonable case to be made that it is less the end of the global order than the the end of Europe and the US being the ones who can decide what the rules are and are not.

And we're not dealing with it very well.

10/ Even if what the US is currently seeing is out of character or contrary to its principles, the fact of the matter is that their system has allowed it.

If the system is not fixed, it will allow it again.

You may not think this who you are, but it's clear this is what you're capable of.

2/ I interpret someone saying "this is not who we are" in the face of something horrific as meaning some combination of:

a) This is not in line with the story we tell about ourselves;
b) This is an abberation and not something that happens in America;
c) The average American does not support this.

Stupidity is a more dangerous enemy of the good than malice.- Bonhoeffer

This much is certain, that it is not an intellectual defect but a human one. There are human beings who are of remarkably agile intellect yet stupid, and others who are intellectually quite dull yet anything but stupid.

Governing is constantly making judgement calls that balance competing interests, good and perfect, short and long term, risk and opportunity.

That's why electing an objectively horrible person because they happen to agree with you on a few major policy areas is a recipe for heartbreak.

I'm doubling down in my view that other governments would have given broadly similar budgets and be castigated by the electorate as a result for not delivering the miracle that are promised but isn't available, and until you break that cycle on we go...
So this is also a continuity budget, there's quite a lot of austerity in non-protected departments, higher welfare budgets that nobody really knows how to tackle, lots of little bits of spending and taxes here and there, and nobody is really happy with the outcome.

When someone tells you complex societal challenges have simple answers, they're either stupid or hoping you are.

When they say those answers are more cruelty to a certain group, they're also evil and hoping you are.
this defies parody. also helps explain why Sec Bessent bizarrely blamed immigrants when confronted with a question about high beef prices

The cool thing about having a political world view that's not a weird personality cult tied to one old man is that there's no one so integral to your policy preferences that whether or not to overlook and conceal their complicity in mass paedophilia is a hard choice.

I really recommend it.

People who are generally upset with how their lives are going, and also feel there are too many people around who look different, can never actually be appeased.

Not by Brexit, not by eliminating FoM, not by new taxes or fees, not by ending ILR, not by denaturalizing not by anything.

We should condemn whoever shot Charlie Kirk.

As we should condemn President Trump for pardoning those who injured and murdered police on January 11th.

And condemn those who lionize Kyle Rittenhouse for shooting dead two activists.
