Summarizing the content can’t tell you how the paper fits into the overall scope of the field, how the author uses evidence, or whether the paper makes convincing arguments! It’s just a summary! There’s no critical evaluation, and that’s the core of engagement with the material
How is that not useful? The summary tells you whether the paper is worth your time to actually read. If you find that it is, then sure no time save since you read it in depth anyway. If you decided not to, then that’s a big time save.

Turns out that if you want to actually know stuff, at some point you’re going to have to do the work yourself, or you’re just cosplaying expertise. It’s selling a shortcut that is at best a simulacrum of knowledge.

I think the least successful appeal to authority I regularly see is folks on social media declaring, "I have a degree in [subject]."

It's a self-undermining boast, because if 'a degree' meant an advanced degree (esp a PhD), you'd say that. So it just means, 'I have a BA in [subject]' which, cool.

Everyone is getting upset about the data centers. They pollute a lot and use a lot of energy and will eventually be very ugly/huge vacant buildings. And I understand being mad about that. Until you consider the state of the lazer tag industry at this moment, and how much help that sector needs.

The results for Australia are a bit depressing tbh. After a start similar to NZ in 2020-21, the impact in late-2021-22 was more than twice as severe as in NZ. NZ skipped 2 big waves by keeping their quarantine going until Feb-April 2022.

"Surely a quick, violent, successful war of aggression is just what the ruler needs to shore up his legitimacy," said just about every failed monarch in history shortly before invading Serbia.
Creating a military conflict with Venezuela gives this administration a legal "hook" to invoke the Alien Enemies Act. In other words, the foreign war is being manufactured in order to facilitate court deference for its domestic mass deportation policy. It's a Stephen Miller Special.

We are now further away from the theatrical release of Raiders of the Lost Ark (June 12, 1981) than it was from the year it takes place in (1936). We have reached the Indiana Jones event horizon.

But also maybe they should ruin his life?

A guy asking Epstein for advice on how to sexually harass a junior colleague knows exactly what Epstein was and was clearly OK with it. I am frankly OK with someone ruining his life.

Evidently it ought to have happened decades ago.
Larry Summers is 70. Firing him is not ruining his life.
