My quote of the day

Can any of you seriously say the Bill of Rights could get through Congress today? It wouldn't even get out of committee.

I am really glad that @jeremymberg.bsky.social wrote this. Everybody who cares about science, and about knowledge generation and civil society generally, should read and share with their favorite administrator.

“This is exactly the moment for people to stand up. And do I see enough people doing it? No, I don’t. It shouldn’t be that there are Democrats that are afraid, because you know what? We’re the targets. We need to be strong, we need to fight back.”

I feel like a broken record, but I have to keep saying it over and over again: a farmer bailout won’t do much of anything because the market is gone. There will be no incentive to plant next year.

The bailout will help payoff farmer debt to the banks. That’s all.

As we see a senseless 100k price tag placed on H- 1B visas, potentially leading to significant loss to higher education and progress of science, let this be a reminder that nearly half of the Nobel Prize winners in science this year are immigrants.

Three of the six U.S. winners in the 2025 Nobel Prize science categories immigrated to the United States, one of them as a teenager.

Virginia State Senate Dems just brought down fire and fury regarding the “Compact,” notifying the President and Rector that UVA would lose ALL STATE APPROPRIATIONS if it signs and cedes the University to “federal political control.” Notably, their letter directly restates points made here by @siva.
sivav.bsky.social
The “compact” for higher ed is an unserious document written by unserious people from a position of spectacular ignorance. No one should take it seriously. Sadly, my bosses are taking it seriously.

The policy failures we’re living with didn’t begin with Donald Trump - and they very clearly won't end with him either.

My party has to offer a vision for how everyday life actually gets better under new and different leadership.

The 280 pediatric flu deaths are the highest number reported in the U.S. since the 2009-10 H1N1 pandemic and the highest for a non-pandemic flu season since child deaths became nationally notifiable in 2004. The mortality rate was highest overall in infants under 6 months of age

Russel Vought is the architect of Project 2025 & has a hand in the crippling the NIH infrastructure.

The WH coerces universities to pledge support for MAGA agenda to access vital federal research funds.

This is not normal or funny or heroic. This feels like facism.

Listen to the lyrics.

Watching a Jane Goodall documentary. There’s a part where the chimps suffered a devastating polio outbreak in Gombe. The outbreak started in humans.

She and her team vaccinated the chimps because the vaccines save lives.

Unreal that our HHS Secretary is actively trying to convince us otherwise.

Mamdani's big selling point: Cuomo will work with Trump.

A top Mamdani adviser tells me internal data shows taking on Trump's authoritarian abuses resonates. It appeals to working class voters across all demographics, countering the frequent claim that this is a "distraction" from issues working people "really" care about.

Speaker Mike Johnson: I am also working during the shutdown. Hiding from elected Democrats to ensure they cannot get sworn into office is work.

A bus of Bronx middle schoolers pulled up to the Capitol this morning for a long-planned field trip just a few hours after the government shut down.

All Capitol tours were cancelled as the guides can’t work in shutdown.

So I escorted them in myself and gave them a personal tour. They were great!
