The UK Government’s decision to include Berwick Bank in the Contracts for Difference scheme is a disaster for Scotland’s seabirds.

Killing tens of thousands of these incredible birds isn’t just reckless, it could push many species towards extinction.

Birdsong, clean rivers, wildlife in our gardens and green spaces all hang in the balance.

We need action now: properly funded protected sites, more high-quality nature-friendly farming and delivery at a scale that will reverse the decline.

Time to deliver.

It’s not adding up.

Nature in England is in freefall, yet today’s Office for Environmental Protection report warns the Government is at serious risk of missing its legally binding targets to restore it.

That must be a wake-up call. ‼️

Wonderful morning taking part in a survey of Trumpeter Finches in Almeria between Retamar and north of San Jose. In my stretch of coast(Cabo village to Rambla Morales) I found 10 Trumpeters and 4 Dotterel. When the full results are in I'll post them here but it's looking like a record count.

Farmers are flocking to Oxford for two farming conferences, and we’re joining them!

As we step into the new year, we’re sowing the seeds for a future where nature and farming go hand in hand.

Keep an eye out here for live updates.

2 Common Cranes went over the Houseboat this morning! Caught me completely unawares. No time to get a photo.

Plastic grass is one of the worst things you can put in your garden. Instead, let patches of grass grow long, and give wildflowers a chance – boosting biodiversity, benefitting pollinators, and filling your patch with colour and life. More: bit.ly/3liIFWv

Another one for the extensive collection @ruthtingay.bsky.social. A brace of shot Pheasants, tied at the neck and given to a shooter. Only to be wrapped in plastic and hurled into the nearest river before washing up here on a remote Solway beach. They are bred as living targets rather than as food.

Well this is frustrating. It’s a beautiful morning in North #Norfolk and there are some great birds less than an hour from home including Black-winged Kite(!), Taiga Bean and Russian White-fronted Geese and Eastern Black Redstart, and I’m laid up/laid low with the worst flu I’ve ever experienced!

A huge flock of Pink-footed Geese has just gone over our cottage in Northeast Norfolk. Couldn’t see the birds but must have been hundreds given the noise and the the time it took for them to pass over. Magical!

A fairly quiet afternoon at #NWTHickling yesterday with 4 Cranes and no Hen Harriers. The day ended in spectacular fashion though with 100’s of Pink-footed Geese going overhead and calling on their way into roost in the fading light. Genuinely awe-inspiring.
