The average fit factor FF for a surgical mask is 3. Many score 300 on an Aura N95. Which makes it two orders of magnitude better. Yes this is predictive of real world outcomes

I tend to think the bewildering non-reaction to COVID is due to a combination of trauma-based denial, minimizing propaganda, conformist behavior, & normalcy bias—along with repeated infections with a virus that damages frontal lobes, resulting in less empathy & worsened risk assessment abilities.

I think that Covid just became yet another “inconvenient truth” for most everyone.
Yet, turning a blind eye to it doesn’t make it go away.
Maybe there’s varying “reasons”…but I have to think that selfishness and greed are at the center as they are in all of our world’s problems.

There’s often true aversion to the sight of people wearing masks, exhibited in both healthcare workers & in greater society. Masks remind them of something they very much want to forget—which is the pandemic of course.

Of the several healthcare workers I’ve seen, only a couple are wearing baggy blues. How could they not know about protecting themselves & others from an airborne pathogen more than five years into a pandemic? It boggles the mind.

Most people are understandably averse to thinking about our institutions collapsing. But public health collapsed in 2018 to 2022. Few seem to understand this, but the evidence is plainly out in the open when you see unmasked doctors & HCWs obliviously (and not perhaps) spreading viruses.

My specialist cancer hospital is downgrading from N95s to surgical masks for apheresis, cell therapies and the haematology ward (which includes autologous stem cell transplant pts).

If we had responded to Covid by normalizing masking, providing respirators in healthcare & adopting clean air standards…we could have beaten the virus.

We would also be seeing less measles, colds & flu.

We would all be healthier.
