I'm deeply saddened to share that Donald Shoup passed away last night. He was the ideal academic—curious, methodical, and concerned with turning ideas into real-world change. TAing his parking course these past few years has one of the greatest honors of my life. Rest in peace, Shoup Dogg.

For those who followed me back on Twitter, you know this is a drum I've been beating for literally years. I have yet to hear any arguments that justify high speed pursuits in anything but a 0.01% hypothetical. Esp in this age of cameras everywhere. It dangerous for both responders and bystanders.
Malikai and Mason Orozco-Romero, 8 and 4, were killed when their mother’s vehicle was rear-ended by a driver fleeing San Diego police. The reason for the high-speed car chase? A faulty headlight. boltsmag.org/after-d...
After Deadly Car Chases, San Diego Police Oversight Body Wants To Restrict Pursuits

I honestly believe our most powerful position in a toxic time that feeds on cynicism, apathy,& despair is to genuinely care and act for a better world.

Cynicism is our enemy. We should check it, incl. on the left. It’s not intellectually superior. It’s the virus they’re trying to infect us with. NO

Right turns on red puts pedestrians at risk, Mineta study says
A 1970s-era federal law requires states to allow right turns on red lights. Mineta Transportation Institute researchers say it’s time to change that.

It is not too late to act on climate change because climate change is not pass/fail. Every faction of a degree matters and is worth fighting for.

That's not propaganda or wishful thinking. It's evidence-based. Suggesting otherwise is as unscientific as climate denial, and just as damaging.

Blue cities have an odd preference for a romanticized idea of “process” over tangible outcomes. Lengthy approval times for building permits are a glaring example. Communities receive no benefits, only harms, from this endless bureaucracy.
It took 1,000+ days to get this 200+ unit downtown apartment building’s land use permit approved. What is the point of the land use permit anyway? The construction permits are approved in 250 days and cover all the life safety, energy, and structural requirements. Why do we need land use permits?

Shared paths where cyclists and pedestrians mix are on the far upper left of this plot: highly preferred by users, but only about as safe as a major street with no bike lane. Separate the modes, friends!

Fifty years ago, a transport revolution started in #Zürich.

#Switzerland rejected urban freeways. Zurich decided not to build a metro. It began building an S-Bahn commuter train network.

And they gave *absolute* priority to trams over cars in center of Zurich.

The result?

In the Netherlands, train stations have a unique look. In most stations, you will find ample bike parking which is easy to use and close to the platforms.

The bike-train combination creates wins all around, allowing users to travel big distances without depending on a car.

One underappreciated aspect of Dutch urbanism is the care and attention to detail around lighting.

This includes the thoughtful way buildings are lit to enhance their beauty, streets are lit to increase road and social safety, and seasonal accents are added to battle the long dark nights of winter.
