meanwhile, in tilting-at-audio-windmills news... we want to make brilliant audio comedy, but we do not have the money you need to do it properly. if 5,000 of you buy it, we can make it.
Today's Smelt post: hey, you liked Ghosts, right? And you like Cunk? Well, Ben Willbond (Ghosts) and Joel Morris (Cunk) want to make a sitcom together. We can't afford to make it without your help. So why not chuck us a tenner plus fees, so we can make it?

I wrote this poem the day after Renee Good was murdered - it’s about how the media and politicians immediately dehumanised her. I have had a few people ask “who wrote it?” So I am putting it up again - written in anger

Truly shocking that Rachel Reeves had the audacity to call herself the U14 girls chess champions when she won the U14 girls chess championship but some bloke thought she was talking about something else.

This is a fantastic production, go see it!
Saw this last night with @yogabright.bsky.social and much as I love the recent film, it may be my favourite adaptation yet: the feat of two actors covering all the supporting roles felt like the kind of theatrical sleight of hand Dickens would've enjoyed www.jermynstreettheatre.co.uk/show/david-c...

I wish I didn’t have to share this. But the BBC has decided to censor my first Reith Lecture.

They deleted the line in which I describe Donald Trump as “the most openly corrupt president in American history.” /1

Imagine challenging a god to anything in ancient greece, you'd be like "hey Apollo I bet you I'm more skilled at the flute" and he'd be like okay if you win I turn you into a goat and if you lose I will chase you randily for miles and then also turn you into a goat

If you want kids to read:

-Reopen the closed libraries
-Give them free books
-Sponsor author visits in schools with high % pupil premium or FSM students
-Work on adult literacy

Then Y8s will have a chance of passing this test

MATs are really quite expensive…
In each MAT, the “back office” is replicated. So we have CEOs, CFOs, etc etc all commanding large salaries that eat away at school funds…

Then there is the demand for expensive schemes/programmes of learning…

No surprise at all…

I know this seems like a tiny thing but I am so, so committed to the idea that Oxbridge should a) not have an earlier UCAS deadline b) not have the stupid “can’t apply to both” rule in place. They aren’t special! Stop pretending that they’re special!
A strange by-product of widening participation at Oxbridge is that it reinforces the idea that not getting into Oxbridge is a big deal; it really isn’t. It’s not a disadvantage to go elsewhere. There are (for now at least) great unis in the UK & it’s not a good thing to act like Oxbridge is special
we would be in a much better state in this country if we stopped focusing on anointing a chosen few working class students into Oxbridge, and instead properly funded all the different sorts of universities that attract students from a wide range of backgrounds already
