Word.
Our current local political struggle is over whether we have a city where $ gets you privileged access & exceptions to the rules (Mayor Wilson + council allies) or whether we get rules + infrastructure/services that help the majority of Portlanders thrive in an increasingly chaotic world (P-Cauc).
This is so fucking stupid.

In Wilson’s Portland, the city is just handing out zoning exceptions to everyone from fossil fuel companies down to property owners who insist on building drive throughs in places where it causes traffic jams on a neighborhood street.

Craig is an idiot. They didn’t attack any policies or even the Israeli state—they shot a bunch of Australian Jews gathering together to celebrate Hanukkah. They targeted them just because they were Jewish, so it’s pretty clearly antisemitic regardless of anything else.
When you’ve gone to this place, it’s time to just admit your only interest in antisemitism is claiming it doesn’t exist

Every word of this about the Republican war on trans people

"This narrative is and always has been a lie. What these people actually have is a seething, obsessive hatred of trans people. They want them either back in the closet or dead."

Our community should be doing more, and our generation is letting down the next. But at least the seeds of compassion and resistance are still alive in the hearts of those who will one day take our place, and perhaps they’ll do what we could not—make a difference and stop this evil from spreading.

So basically ICE is the US Gestapo now. But, we shouldn’t compare the US to Nazi Germany because that’s hyperbole…
WTF? ICE is arguing in court that US CITIZENS can be detained, handcuffed, and biometrically screened unless they can prove citizenship on the spot. And that a REAL ID isn't enough. This isn't border security.

Must be nice to be able to splurge and buy a Trappist once home to modern contemplative pioneers like Thomas Keating and William Meninger when the mood hits you.
And I feel guilty for buying a latte
Palantir CEO Alex Karp just paid a staggering $120 million for a 3,700-Acre Colorado monastery.

It's the most expensive residential property purchase in the area to date.

Karp reportedly owns 20 properties around the world, many in top skiing locations.

What they said.
Capitalism is fundamentally incompatible with democracy. It inevitably results in unconscionable concentration of capital that buys elections with their ill gotten gains.
How is this legal?

When working people realize those who own & control companies don’t care about decent wages & benefits because they can still get rich from our labour, even in a shitty market, the sooner we’ll be able to force changes. Until then, they’ll continue to buy politicians & pay us as little as possible.
Today's abysmal jobs report is a reminder that tax cuts for corporations and the rich don’t create jobs or grow the economy.

What's required is investment in working people — and better wages.

When workers have money to spend, the economy grows and businesses create more jobs.

Remember this.

Tonight is the first night of Hanukkah, a minor but popular holiday in the Jewish calendar. The primary event that Hanukkah celebrates is the rededication of the Second Temple in Jerusalem after a successful revolt against an oppressive Seleucid empire.
Extraordinary courage from Ahmed al Ahmed, a Muslim, 43-year-old father of two, who bravely risked his life to save his neighbors celebrating Hanukkah.

Praying for his full & speedy recovery.

And so deeply inspired by his example.

Due to owning the means of production (material as well as mental), the capitalist class has the ability to shape the dominant ideas and ethics of society as well as its material shape and social relations, thereby helping to manufacture our consent (or at least passivity) for the status quo.

Nice article on @bkswpicspdx.bsky.social. I love supporting local businesses, esp. ones promoting diversity. Coincidentally, I’ve been collecting specific issues depicting Kitty Pryde’s Judaism & writing something about why they’re important/stand out to make into a display + digital presentation.
New at @comicsjournal.bsky.social: A decade ago, Katie Pryde and her shop BOOKS WITH PICTURES began championing diversity in comics retail with the motto "Comics for Everyone." Now, she talks her near-miss with financial crisis, what she's learned, and what the future the holds.

Had a recent patient decline getting their flu and pneumonia vaccines because of some dumb shit they said recently. And social media has helped spread their disinformation to a ridiculous extent because all the Zucks and Musks care about are the clicks, not the truth.
Childhood vaccination rates were falling before Trump took office.

But RFK Jr.'s latest attacks on vaccines will make new outbreaks of old diseases even more deadly.
