I remember a senior engineer at Twitter once commenting on how sf was lacking in strangers who would do you a random kindness. Glad to see it hasn't changed 🥰

Would love to blame solely situation bad republican governance, but unfortunately it is human nature to discount rare events and underprepare for disasters
In 2018, Kerr County debated installing flood sirens, but the $1 million pricetag was considered too high. “Trying not to raise taxes,” a commissioner said.

And this year, the Texas Legislature didn’t pass a bill to help fund outdoor sirens.

Officials Pushed for Better Warning System for Years Before Deadly Floods
A sheriff in 2016 recalled pulling ‘kids out of trees’ in summer camps as leaders repeatedly discussed installing a siren system, but didn’t do so.

The chenoweth stat makes no sense. So if 3.5% is militantly for something and 94% very against, how does the 3.5% win? Does the side supporting 1/6 not count as a 3.5% movement?

Revolting that students are cheating this much, but understandable. I remember one of the first books I had to read was De rerum natura, by Lucretius, and so obviously irrelevant to the messages I’d gotten about college being a ticket to a middle class life.
“Massive numbers of students are going to emerge from university with degrees, and into the workforce, who are essentially illiterate…Both in the literal sense and in the sense of being historically illiterate and having no knowledge of their own culture, much less anyone else’s.”
Everyone Is Cheating Their Way Through College

This is pretty much the opposite of what happened during the Cold War, which was an outpouring of funding into fields like anthropology, so the us could better court allies against the Soviet Union. More proof America is currently ruled by idiots
Gov. DeWine just signed SB1, a law ending “DEI” in Ohio public higher ed.

Now that it’s law, U of Toledo just killed the following BA programs:

• Asian Studies
• Disability Studies
• Middle East Studies
• Philosophy
• Religious Studies
• Women's/Gender Studies

And…

I’m not mystified by it at all. It’s part of the techno-fascist agenda. Curtis Yarvin has insisted that existing scientific institutions must be cremated in order to facilitate a regime change. These people believe that old elite institutions must die and be replaced by new, loyal institutions.
of all the things the administration is doing, i am a little mystified by this effort to completely destroy the science, technology and medical research sector in the united states

Yesterday & today’s anti-Hamas protests *in Gaza* have barely made a dent on news coverage.

But they should be covered seriously & noted by every publication & person working on 🇮🇱🇵🇸.

Here’s my best guess on why virtually every commentator on 🇮🇱🇵🇸 is ignoring this: 🧵

I have many strident critiques of Signal (primarily around Moxie's decision to embrace centralized infrastructure that wasn't designed to be resilient and survive), but if you share that fucking Yasha Levine / Counterpunch drelk about Signal being a honeypot you're a fucking fool and doing cop work.

I feel the thing people don't get is that primaries are dumb but Democratic primary voters in high-salience elections are basically the optimal high-information voters in public choice theory. They will make the best decision possible, whether or not that's good enough is a different question lol.
