Like, I don't know exactly what is going on at Larian, but stating in an interview that you want to ship a game bigger than BG3 in 3 to 4 years, was the first clue.
The AI-nonsense they're pushing was the second clue.
Then people started talking about their hiring practices, third clue.

Man, the Larian story is going places, isn't it?

Have they all just chugged the kool-aid or is the tech + financial markets lobby forcing "AI" integration in a desperate bid to extend the bubble - because Firefox users absolutely DO NOT want this.

I'm saying this as someone who actually thought that generative models *might* be useful for ideation when they came up for the first time a few years back: fuck right off.

The only thing it's good at is ripping the soul out of your artists work.

Also "placeholder text"... use lorem ipsum ffs!

"we USE ai, but our game wont CONTAIN it" is a clarification that no one has ever cared about & now CEOs are using it as a wedge to get their foot in the door as a part of a long term plan into normalizing AI, just like how 'it's just placeholder' was used with E33. dont cede even an inch of ground

Don’t use AI for Placeholder assets (or at all). The point is to make them obvious they need replacing

Textures should be hot pink
Text should be BOLD ALL CAPS
Animations should be the Macarena

When they say “we only used AI for placeholder” what they really mean is they hoped you wouldn’t notice

I hate that I'm currently memorizing CPU names and CPU names and prices and VRAM numbers. I hate this for myself.
I hate that the openness of the PC platform means that there inherently cannot be a cheap painless entry point - because then people would buy them up to mine crypto and shit.

This concept is often hard for devs to grasp too, not just players. I put it as "the joy of doing" vs. "the joy of being".

Why does some grind or hard challenge feel joyful in game A, but a chore in game B? You enjoy *existing* in game A. The "thing to do" serves that joy.

Pet the dog. Enjoy being

Why am I so against generative AI in games?

Because I simply do not want my initial reaction to art to be one of suspicion and scrutiny, AI slop is fundamentally damaging my relationship to art and artistry, and I am deeply resentful that it is forcing me to be guarded when I should be wowed.

the best way to get out of an extrinsic game that you find yourself still playing despite disliking is to just force yourself to miss an event in-game. if you're the completionist type it's an extremely fast way to sever yourself from it

Basically, why I stopped playing both Overwatch and Splatoon 3. When you find yourself grinding a card game you don't like for an emote you probably wouldn't use anyway it's time to stop.

Can I have less eugenics on my feed? I know the 2020s are going GREAT but is that so much to ask? Also less "ironic" eugenics please, while I'm at it.

Price is not known yet, and 8GB VRAM doesn't scream future-proof (upgradable?) but this could legit be my next daily driver. Could shape up to be a fairly painless Linux-box for gaming.
Valve is making a console. The Steam Machine, a sleek box with the guts of a mid-range PC that runs SteamOS, will arrive in early 2026. Prices TBD, but unlike the failed Steam Machine initiative from a decade ago, this is Valve's own device. Big news www.bloomberg.com/news/article...

I had a look at SteamPeek, which, people tell me, has "better discoverability tools" than Steam. I don't think I've been as unimpressed with a service like this in a long while.
