The most frustrating thing about this war is that the US could step in forcefully now with harsh sanctions against Russia and a large military package for Ukraine with ranged weapons as the centrepiece, and the war would end soon with a Russian defeat.

Somehow, but mistakenly, they thought that the US would still be a reliable supplier of arms. They would have done better fighting back. Everyone - russia, China the US - can see the EU will always back off. So they will keep pushing and keep getting.
