The UAE is an authoritarian autocracy, a petro-state with no income tax for citizens, to bribe them for the lack of democratic voice or free speech

It is 85% migrant, a segregated society with a ban on integration in principle and practice, few rights, equal opportunities, nor voice for incomers

The first Sectoral Adaptation Plans were not specific and measurable, and most did not have KPIs or milestones. There is a critical need for measurable action in the next plans.

as many multi generation Irish also don't have them. I know many who have neither interest in GAA nor speak Irish.

I am not criticising the article. I am just saying it raises a lot of questions. I do not think these cultural markers are terribly useful as they tend to be used more to exclude than include which I think was the implicit point, but I am not even sure they are a good marker/
morgenrothedgar.bsky.social
Is it really though? I am not so sure. I know quite a few Irish people who do not play any GAA games and don't follow it either - are they not Irish? But maybe that in itself is a fundamental question - what is Irishness. Some seem to think that waving a flag makes them particularly Irish.

Do people in the south tie Irishness to the GAA or is that a misperception ?
Do people in the south really want northern protestants to feel Irish?
2 questions just in relation to one of the quotes.

A real debacle for Martin, and you did not even mention the internal candidate.
Gaffe and poor judgement prone Connolly in the Aras is not going to be good for Ireland.

The article and what he said raises so many questions!!

And also external and internal actors who are pouring a lot of money into destabilising the political systems in liberal democracies.
Democracies that don't defend themselves against this will be history soon.

If politics are going crazy in several European countries one after the other, I think it is time to go past blaming the failures of individual political actors (and there are quite a few, both in the UK and France) to looking at the systemic pressures our political systems are failing to deal with.

If you are overly focused on the admittedly increasingly batsh*t character of British politics, don‘t neglect the batsh*t character of French politics.

The Special Criminal Court certainly is and so is Unification.

Sinn Fein played the selection very smartly. If Connolly loses she wasn't a SF candidate, if she wins they backed a winner. I the meantime Connolly has gone full Shinner.

The Good Friday Agreement makes clear that the people alone will decide our future. We cannot delay, deny, or obstruct that right. The Irish and British governments should agree a date for a border poll, and begin preparing now to ensure it is inclusive, fair, and respectful of all traditions

They were looking for a divisive campaign to rerun decisions the Irish people already decided and in many cases decisively. They will keep up their divisive campaigning and will subtly incite people.
