As #France is without government once more, it is worth remembering that its total bilateral support for #Ukraine is less than that of Sweden, Denmark and the Netherlands.

Not combined. Individually, and in €bn not % of GDP.

Why are people getting excited about the “Nobels”? Everyone knows that the only REAL one is the Sveriges @riksbank.se Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel. The others are just self-aggrandising PR set up by Nobel himself.

Tragic news from Canada where the Canadian Supreme Court has gone from the official dress on the left to the one on the right
Canadian Supreme court. Everyone is dressed in bright red wooly gowns, with a beige trim. It looks sort of like a Santa robe The Canadian Supreme court. Everyone is dressed in black gowns with a bright white kravat, and two thin red vertical lines on the side of the robe

This was first pointed out by @codendahl.bsky.social, so I listened to the relevant part of the interview myself.

It's just 1 minute long. Here's a translated transcript, along with the original German if you wish.

Fully understand. And I am known for being a critic of Merkel long before it was cool. But this interview is harmless, and more of a bizarre defence of her legacy than a blame game with other European countries. Let's move on.
codendahl.bsky.social
I was being polite. You would have to have a pretty strong pre-defined view of her to come to that conclusion. She does not blame them in any way. She just said they disagreed.
codendahl.bsky.social
Not defending Merkel's policy or legacy, but her interview with the Hungarian outlet has been misrepresented, she just doesn't blame Poland or the Baltics. Have a look at the original interview (on youtube).
codendahl.bsky.social
Indeed. We should focus on all of that, and not on things she didn't say.
codendahl.bsky.social
Ok, this is way outside my area of expertise, so I defer to others. It just sounded a bit bizarre to me.
codendahl.bsky.social
Structural reasons, true, she overstates those. On Putin, she is quite negative, but in the calm, rational Merkel-style of talking about bad people.

Chers Français, je ne veux pas vous stresser, mais il faut battre les 10 jours de mandat de Giulio Andreotti en 1972. Faites de votre mieux et bonne chance.

The bizarre bit of the interview is the covid pandemic bit and how it prevented face-to-face diplomacy. On *that* she is much closer to blaming the pandemic for the war in Ukraine, and somewhat clumsily says once "the main reason" where she probably meant "one of the main reasons". Still bizarre.
codendahl.bsky.social
She literally says "we cannot know what would have happened", implying that the outcome of her larger EU-Russia format idea was very uncertain.

I would have phrased this differently, knowing what we know today. But she is not blaming Poland and the Baltics.
codendahl.bsky.social
Then she somewhat clumsily says without further explanation that her term ended and Putin's full aggression began, which *could* be read as suggesting that the absence of diplomacy caused this. But that is a stretch.
codendahl.bsky.social
Poland and the Baltics, she says, feared that the EU did not have a common position on Russia.

(They were probably right, and also feared German/French delusions about Russia in such talks.)
codendahl.bsky.social
In essence, she emphasises diplomacy more than I would, downplays the cost, and defends her record on military investment (laughable, IMHO).

On Poland and Baltics, she describes the different views on what to do in the summer of 2021. She wanted more diplomacy in larger EU-Russia format.
codendahl.bsky.social
I am not a #Merkel fan (as many of you know), but the headlines following her interview with Partizan are complete nonsense.

She does not blame Poland or the Baltics at all.

Yeah, except when one of those takes a pigeon out of the air in your Berlin courtyard and devours it on the playground. Then you are left to deal with the mess.
