As long as there have been children, there have been toys. As it's the #LateLateToyShow we thought we'd share some of our favourite toys in the @nmireland.bsky.social

Many toys through history copy adult life, like this wonderful toy boat and sword from Viking Dublin

The Lissava Dolmen • Tipperary

You can find this portal tomb hidden away in Scaragh Wood, close to the town of Cahir in South Tipperary.

Based on excavated examples, it likely dates to the earlier to middle part of the Neolithic period, making it around 5,500 years old.

Hey fellow old people!

C'est la Vie by B*Witched was released in 1998. 27 years ago.

27 years before 1998, the Theme from Shaft by Isaac Hayes was released in 1971.

Street Fighter, 1995. A disaster of a film that utterly defiles its source material and all that is good about cheap chopsocky films.

Rescued by the literal deathbed ham-job of Raul Julia, eating the scenery whole as a parting gift to his kids, who were fans of the games.

I remember when Irish governments literally sold Irish citizenship to those who could afford to fling a million or so in investments in.. oh... pet food companies... things like that.

I don't recall those particular 'immigrants' being blamed for our many woes.

'Yes, there's some difficulties there' - Alan Shatter on Gaza today while UN investigation says Israel is conducting genocide and torturing prisoners. He continues to deny any reality of the two years of genocide against Palestinians and ten of thousands dead, particularly children. #Spéirghorm

Board games have a long history in Ireland. I wonder how many family squabbles took place around this Hnefatafl board [a sort of Viking chess] found at Ballinderry Crannog in Westmeath.

Gaming pieces were also some of the most common finds in Dublin

I dislike the Late Late Toy Show.
There. I said it.
Even as a child I disliked the Toy Show and it's endless Billie Barry tappitty tappitty tap Glee kids.
I tried watching it with grandkids when they were smallies.
Turns out disliking the Late Late Tot Show might be genetic.

Well if @simonharrisireland.bsky.social is to believed it's because of 'immigrants'.
That's right. 72,000 homes - all ready to be lived in are vacant because people who lived in another country moved to Ireland.
Apparently.

#SpéirGhorm
#IrishPolitics
Recent CSO data found 72,000 vacant homes empty, connected to services & ready to go
So why are they still empty?
Record homelessness, children being traumatised
'Cos of ideology
Introducing compulsory rental & sales & custodian squatting would be transformative

When it comes to extracting as much
as possible from people living in Ireland,
the Madness of Mammon knows no bounds 🤦🏾‍♀️

#spéirghorm #property #studentlife #DerelictIreland
This is f*cking insane & will make it next to impossible for many students to afford university
Remember many students are already paying up to €15k to private landlords for 9 months
I've also met a student paying €18k!
Message is clear
F*ck the students
Greed rules

‘The waves were so great that in their troughs the shallows of the shore were almost visible, and the schooner, with all sails set, was rushing with such speed that, in the words of one old salt, "she must fetch up somewhere, if it was only in hell".’

Pinning this thread about the Gen X billionaires destroying the world with their apartheid nostalgia—
and the Irish Dunnes Stores “check-out girls” who helped bring down that South African apartheid regime with 1980s solidarity from the far end of the other hemisphere.

#spéirghorm
I left Ireland and moved to New York in 1997. Decades on, what the US has become has broken my immigrant heart.

It also baffled me, until I began to piece together Gen X memories of apartheid South Africa.

Harry Avery's Castle • Tyrone

The former stronghold of Henry Aimhréidh O'Neill, (anglicised as Harry Avery).

The Annals of the Four Masters record his death in 1392:

'Henry Aimhreidh.... known for his justice, nobility, and hospitality, died on the festival day of St Brendan'.
