Treat that specific phrasing as a red flag for rhetorical inflation, even if the broader ❝this is exceptional warming❞ message is true.2,9,10 What Would Strengthen the ❝Genetic Adaptation❞ Claim (And Make this More Than Hopeful Signalling) If you wanted to turn this into a robust adaptation story, you’d look for: Whole-genome resequencing (not just RNA) to verify new TE insertions / allele frequency shifts. Replication across time (multi-year sampling) to separate weather/season from climate trend. Fitness linkage: are the candidate changes associated with better body condition, cub survival, mating success? Cross-population tests: do similar TE signals appear in other subpopulations exposed to warming?2,4,5 Judgment This is good, hypothesis-generating science with a plausible mechanism and an interesting climate-association signal — but the public-facing ❝they’re genetically adapting, so extinction might be avoided❞ vibe is ahead of the evidence. If anything, the most defensible takeaway is harsher: warming is already pushing bears into stress-adjacent biological territory, and even if that triggers genomic tinkering, it’s not guaranteed to be fast enough —or beneficial enough— to outrun habitat loss. Hope is fine. There's so much variety in the guard focused fiction. I really like what Abnett did with the Gaunt's Ghosts series. Dead men walking was brutal. I should read the Ciaphas Cain books!

I love the scale and wildness of the Abnett Inquisition books. Usually you're focusing on the actions of a squad of marines or guardsman on a battlefield but even in the first book Eisenhorn and company are traveling to worlds that barely exist in our dimension

Make it into any of the Ravenor series that follow? Way more of an ensemble story, but very fun. The unfinished Bequin books are a lot of fun too, Abnett is definitely my favorite BL author.

Sort of idly reading the Horus Heresy books starting with Horus Rising. I'm generally a big Dan Abnett fan so I may have some level of bias here but it's a really strong start. It carries a huge load of world building with grace and makes even Ezekyle Abbadon a fairly likeable character.
