I’d recommend buying from Apple refurbished (I’ve done that a few times including a giant iMac lemon I had to write to Steve Jobs to replace bc AppleCare sucked). Check to see if your credit cards offer an extended warranty and use that to buy it if you’re worried.

My iPhone 15 Pro Max (2yo now) took few months to drop from 100% to 86% of battery capacity, and it's taking AGES to drop from 85% to 80%.
When they tell you they'll change battery for free when it goes below 80% (with AppleCare+) they know what they are doing.

They bent policy to do it, too. I had AppleCare but cat pee apparently doesn’t fall under its usual liquid damage policy. It’s a really nice one, only a few years old, my parents got it for me as a graduation gift for my MPH. We’ve had Apples since the Apple II+, and I will say their service is good

Ownership of an apple product without AppleCare (the extended warranty) is, and always has been, a terrible move (I worked for Apple in 2007). If you can't afford AppleCare, you can't afford an Apple product.
