#Bluebooks
I had a law school professor lose all the exam bluebooks he was grading while on a cruise over winter break, resulting in an administrative nightmare.

Just planting that one for ya for another night.

I have fond memories of bluebooks. 💙

I genuinely don't want to have to go back to handwritten quizzes and bluebooks in class. I really really fucking don't.

Are there no bluebooks? Are there no scantrons?

I truly hate to say it, but I'm going back to bluebooks this coming semester for my theory class. I had good luck with papers this semester but those conditions (small class, very specific content) don't apply to most courses.

True. I suppose we could just go back to closed-book bluebook exams, or bluebooks + printed notes.

But I remember trying to decipher bluebooks back in the day, and it was hell.

Though it's hard to brain-dump by hand... but also the accommodations issue gets bigger.

Turn *everything* over to bluebooks.

That includes Presidential debates. I don't want to hear your canned comebacks. I want to see you sit down and write 1,000 words of your own original thinking about the Tenth Amendment.

(I even promise to watch the whole time, to help the ratings.)

Time to switch article submission as well as referee reports to handwritten bluebooks.

My mother shared this year that she & my father bought me an Apple II so I could type my papers at home — and get fewer low grades for turning in essays in unreadably small handwriting.

(I improved enough to make my bluebooks half-readable in HS and college, but my handwriting still baffles folks.)

Thinking of going fully analog as a response. I hate Canvas. Back to bluebooks baby.

Pre-AI, I was allowing students to use computers in open-book exams. Now I am back to closed-book bluebooks. Students get their documented accommodations but the course is less accessible. And more & more ppl are banning tech from classrooms, which means many students won't use it even with

A sobering account of how AI may “flatline” students’ thinking. MIT Media Lab study of how our brainwaves respond to AI use. So what is ethical teaching for AI? Allow it but require students to write freehand in bluebooks? This tightrope requires an acrobat. Thoughts?

Once I had accommodations in college like extended test times or using a word processing software rather than written bluebooks my GPA went from like a 2.5 to a 3.6. I have 4.0 in grad school now because of it. None of that happens if my slower physical processing isnt taken into account.

I asked my coworkers if we got bluebooks here in Washington cause I didn't for my first election...the glazed eyes. When I explained what it was, many yeahs and we don't call it thats. 😁

Sure, and I do blue book exams in my lecture courses. But bluebooks are never going to be able to replicate the kind of thought that goes into crafting an essay. Writing and rewriting are crucial to thinking and a timed blue book only gets us halfway there.

A note on bluebooks: I am enjoying grading much more this semester. I am actually engaging with the students thoughts. Much less of a chore.
I've also returned to bluebooks. It's the only way.
