I tend to view German claims through the lens of Brest-Litovsk & Bucharest!

But no matter what excuses they think up - this year Russia celebrates May 9th being unable to conquer a smaller neighbor for longer than it took the USSR to make it from Brest-Litovsk to Moscow and then to Berlin.

Russians started WWII together with Germany. Germany on 1.9.1939 and RU joined them on 17.9.39. Hitler+Stalin=big love until 22.6.41. Pictures are from common military parade in Brest-Litovsk/Poland on 22.9.39. Molotov-Ribbentrop pact on 23.8.39 had secret protocols where DE+RU divided Europe.

I was thinking about the Reichstag majority's preferences for negotiation positions for Brest-Litovsk already (vaguely 14 points but for the nationalities under the Russian yoke) that were undone by the officers involved IIRC.

What are you talking about? The Germans did not exactly want to conquer and destroy Russia in WWI. Propably wouldn't have succeeded either. Also the treaty of Brest-Litovsk had a lot to do with the Russian Revolution (which the Germans secretly supported). So it was a completely different thing.

The other side is that Lenin saw it as a means to build an army, which is exactly what he did do and what changed between Brest-Litovsk and the end of the war. Russia was beaten enough it went through three phases of a revolution, the victorious option ceased to exist by 1915.

Lenin actually wanted an immediate 'deal with Germany to get the Germans to remove as much of their troops as possible,' Trotsky thought no peace but no army was a way to fight a war. Trotsky was badly wrong and Brest-Litovsk was a result of that.
December 31, 2025 at 6:48 PM
As I said, 'bad' and 'Brest-Litovsk' were two different categories and what they walked into there was actually avoidable. The Germans wanted out, not to have to do yet another round of war there and were willing to accept terms for that.

And to reiterate, the Lenin peace he wanted wouldn't have been great from a Russian POV but considerably short of Brest-Litovsk, which would have left Soviet Russia in a much better position. Trotsky's bravery outran his senses a few times, that was the most disastrous.

Brest-Litovsk was foreign exploitation but for the French stopping the Centre Powers reinforced by what Lenin handed over at the Marne.

It was a bet on others rescuing him. Nothing else.

A more rational modern map shows the claims made after Brest-Litovsk, none of which includes Crimea, and the two "Ukraines" in Kiev and Lwow also do not claim it.

Kharkov is the "Ukraine" that wants the strong ties to Moscow then and becomes the Ukrainian SSR capital later

Lenin was obliged to give up Ukraine and Belarus under the treaty of Brest Litovsk because those territories were occupied by the Kaiser's troops.

That is, until the Western allies beat Germany, the troops came home and the Kaiser abdicated. Then the treaty didn't matter (and was probably void).

Yeah, thank God for the US, UK and France beating Germany and getting Lenin out of his obligations under the treaty of Brest Litovsk, I guess

By which I mean - by Brest-Litovsk the US had already official been in the war for a year! Although the US expeditionary force didn't play a major role until May
December 16, 2025 at 8:21 PM
The U.S. had actually joined the year before Brest-litovsk, had kerensky not squandered the army Russia could have easily held out until the likely earlier than otl German surrender
December 16, 2025 at 8:07 PM
They didn't even really need to wait that long. The US joined a literal month after Brest-Litovsk was signed - seems very unlikely that Germany was going to make it six months from that point in any event, or commit to capturing Petrograd given the Western Front

World War I (1914–1917): Russia could not withstand Germany and Austria-Hungary. Military defeats, economic collapse, and revolution led to the fall of the Tsarist regime, and the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk ceded vast territories to Germany.
