Anyway, this has made me sad about the state of newsrooms and their size/resulting focus.

Three Minnesota Democrats joined the dissenters: Reps. Martin Sabo, Jim Oberstar and Collin Peterson, who called the bill "an overreaction" to the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks and the anthrax scare. The vote masked divisions over the bill's wide-ranging money laundering and police-power provisions. But in the end, many legislators said they were willing to bow to a deepening sense of national crisis. House Speaker Dennis Hastert, R-IIl., said the measure is takes "a responsible step forward by giving law enforcement the tools necessary to secure the safety of Americans while protecting our constitutional rights." In particular, he praised provisions in the bill to remove legal barriers that prevent the FBI, CIA and other law enforcement agencies from sharing information, a situation often cited as among the security lapses that contributed to the Sept. 11 attacks. In addition to expanding police search and wiretap authority, the bill would triple the number of border patrol agents and customs inspectors along the nation's 4,000-mile border with Canada. Several members of Minnesota's delegation said they wrestled with the provisions that give police and the FBI expanded domestic surveillance powers. "I initially voted yes, and then switched my vote to no, said Sabo, one of 62 Democrats, three Republicans and one independent who voted against the bill. "Clearly, we have to move aggressively against terrorism, but some of the things in this bill are excessive. Civil liberties groups warned of a threat to traditional American freedoms, and parts of the bill are expected to face constitutional challenges in court. The City as Idea explores conceptual approaches to photographing the built environment, examining how people and environments are shaped by corporate interests and consumer culture. Often resulting in experimental material processes, these photographs shift our understanding of city imagery. The City as Community highlights the need for human connection, capturing gatherings of families and diverse communities, along with back streets and alleys and their less familiar narratives. On this day in 1868, Alexander Roberts Dunn died.
Born in York (Toronto), Upper Canada in 1833, he was the first Canadian to earn the Victoria Cross. He earned the medal for his actions at Charge of the Light Brigade during the Battle of Balaclava on Oct. 25, 1854.
