Still supposedly a factor in FG politics in Monaghan (there was an attempt by local FGers in Cavan to revive them a decade or so ago).
Totally unrelatedly the AoH have been extremely marginal in Irish life since the 1920s (a bit longer in Northern Ireland).

There was a great story that HH could have told about Ireland moving forward from sectarianism, but because she had come from a soft seat she didn't bother to prep for a national campaign (where the OO would be unusual, even if it would be unsurprising in Cavan-Monaghan)

But there is another tradionally protestant seat, Fine Gael's Cavan-Monaghan seat that HH held, which Maxwell now holds, and Seymour Crawford. There's a large local Presbyterian community there and all politics is local, so the local party selects one of their own (who'll typically be a protestant)

6/ Despite brutal repression, the movement spread east and west, absorbing other rural revolts like the Rightboys. By the mid-1790s, the Defenders dominated counties Louth, Cavan, Meath, Monaghan, and Dublin.

Home effects are always important in Irish elections but this time they were massive (and seem to be increasingly so for the Presidency) - she did 18 points in C-M than anywhere else. I had been sceptical she would do as well in the Cavan bit of the constituency as in the Monaghan bit - was wrong.

Now the harder bit - Constituencies: Here are Humphries Best Constituencies (taken from the twitter of @irelandvotes.bsky.social) - her five best constituencies were Cavan-Monaghan, Dublin Rathdown, Dun Laoghaire, Dublin Bay South and Limerick County (3 out of 5 from my prediction).

There were markedly few of them in Galway W and Cavan-Monaghan, and also SFheavy rurals like Donegal. Places where always-voters found it easier to choose one, as it were

It was not the only county. Monaghan voted no too, but its pairing with Cavan carried that yes. A county with a much older demographic as well, the Ros result was still almost 50:50. It was close, like so many other county results. Fed up listening to this inaccurate claim about my home county.
