In 1987, I attended a massive march against one of the worst Sundowns Towns in America: Cumming, GA. It was lead by the MLK Center in Atlanta, Hosea Williams, Coretta Scott King. Marjorie Taylor Green was 13 at the time. This was her stomping ground. This place incubated her hate. Don’t trust her.
THOUSANDS IN CIVIL RIGHTS MARCH JEERED BY CROWD IN GEORGIA TOWN By Dudley Clendinen, Special To the New York Times Jan. 25, 1987 This small town in Forsyth County was overwhelmed today by civil rights marchers, members of the Ku Klux Klan and their sympathizers and an army of National Guardsmen and law-enforcement officers who kept the opposing groups separated. Guarded by what a spokesman for the Governor's office called "the greatest show of force the state has ever marshalled," a crowd of marchers estimated at 12,000 to 20,000 funneled slowly into Cumming, where a week earlier counterdemonstrators, throwing stones and bottles, disrupted an interracial "walk for brotherhood" prompted by the all-white county's racist legacy. Duke, a former Ku Klux Klan leader, were arrested or detained. Mr. Duke, who now runs the National Association for the Advancement of White People, and two comrades were charged with reckless conduct and blocking a highway. Various others, said Harry Heath, the spokesman for the Georgia Guard, were arrested for possession of unspecified weapons as well as bows and arrows, fireworks, and for making a telephone bomb threat. No injuries were reported, and by 6:30 P.M buses carrying the marchers had begun to depart. Among those marching were Coretta Scott King, the widow of the Rev. Nor would the agents allow reporters to cross into the courthouse square where speeches were to be made. Estimates of the crowd of marchers varied, with march organizers putting the figure at 20,000. County Sheriff's deputies estimated that 12,000 to 14,000 people participated. A National Guard spokesman gave an estimate of 15,000 to 20,000. Whatever the final figure, the march was one of the largest civil rights demonstrations since a 1965 rally that followed a march from Selma, Ala. to Montgomery. After demonstrators marched a mile and a quarter from the Cumming city limits to the courthouse square, they were greeted by at least three separate groups of protesters, some of whom chanted, "Go home, n-word."
