#CounterReformation
On #ThisDayInHistory in 1545 the #CouncilOfTrent opened. Initially aiming to reconcile #Catholic & #Lutheran churches, it refused to consider doctrinal points raised by ##Luther. It is unfair, though, to call it a #CounterReformation, as the #CatholicReformation did change a lot.

they never did any of that against copernicus though, and the decision to try him can't be understood without the tensions around the reformation/counterreformation. like it was all roughly coterminous with the thirty year's war. and its main effect was to humiliate the church before the protestants

getting the new counterreformation started early 👍
He said "Amen" straight into the drop

Lmao Pope Leo threw a rave for an archbishop's 75th birthday this is kind of incredible

You can’t reach Protestants through writing. You probably can’t reach them at all. Woke counterreformation now.

Would honesty love to read a piece about polyamory in post-counterreformation France, Italy and Spain.

Fighting 20-40 years over the sanctity and sanctioning of marriage and sacraments in Christianity - only to be like "oh well - if only we're Catholics and confess, it will be alright"

Lol, just like I said.

Jesus taught about forgiveness, acceptance, sharing, respect. Yet noone sane claims that crusades, counterreformation or bloody witch hunting were commited by non-christians, cause they were against the holy scriptures.

WOKE COUNTERREFORMATION NOW!
As a staunch critic of the Catholic Church: the Protestant Reformation has been a disaster for mankind and Martin Luther should be rendered damnatio memoriae.

and since sеxual assault isn’t taken seriously by any company, especially after the metoo counterreformation, he could have had a weapon and attacked her like william mckinley! comically easy for him to get there, violate her, and just … leave.

harvey kwiyani’s recent book entitled decolonizing mission really emphasizes the importance of the fall of Constantinople to so much of the history that followed—discovery, mission, colonialism, counterreformation. i had never had those dots connected

MAINLINE PROTESTANT COUNTERREFORMATION TIME
bsky.app/profile/sara...
“One of the chants that has become ubiquitous at these protests at Broadview is, ‘Love your neighbor, love your God, save your soul and quit your job,’” said Black, who pastors at the First Presbyterian Church of Chicago. “Everybody chants that.” ⚓️
Wanna learn more about the pastor in this photo?

I talked to him yesterday.

He's currently part of a lawsuit against DHS, in part due to this exact moment: religionnews.com/2025/10/07/i...

ive said it before and i'll say it again, the most effective PR in history was the Counterreformation-era apologists who somehow managed to convinced Protestants at scale that Rome holds the monopoly on being Catholic, a perspective which is barely starting to change

This is why we need Woke Counterreformation now.

was led in the Visigothic period by people who would become major Spanish saints, and ultimately was practiced by the Arabized Christian population (Mozarabs) under Islamic rule (prior to a revitalization during the Counterreformation). 2/3

this is why I need to be pope! the world so badly needs a woke counterreformation!
I think there's something deeply socially corrosive about this American evangelical worldview that says that the things you do and say are less important than your person relationship with God such that it's possible to be a bigot while nuturing a decent human within.

Bartolomé Esteban Murillo, Apparition of the Virgin to St Ildephonso (Seville 1655) This miraculous scene from the life of St Ildefonso portrays the Virgin descending from Heaven to give him a chasuble as a prize for his praises. Counterreformation policy in Spain required devotion to Mary.

Check this out:

It is a #Baroque revival, where very few authoritarian nepotists, from their own imagined god's grace, enrich themselves at the cost of all others.

In #Fascism, they were actually fucking proud of their well working postal service while using it for their evil!

#counterreformation

Sinner’s from not that far from Trent though, complicates the whole Counterreformation thing a bit

Bartolomé Esteban Murillo, The Holy Family with a Little Bird (Seville 1650) A domestic scene filled with tenderness showing the Mary winding a skein of thread and watching the Christ Child, who leans on St Joseph while he plays with a little bird and a dog, typical motifs of the counterreformation.

removing tax-exempt status from churches on a case-by-case basis as part of a Mainline Protestant counterreformation aimed at eradicating the idolatry and heresy that dominates American "Christianity"

Note how "Indiana House Bill 1001",
the #Indiana #massacre of academic disciplines,
rhymes with "Indiana Senate Bill 101",
the "Religious Freedom Restoration Act".

It is not just about money.
It is #counterreformation.

Speaking of resistance and #WWII

18 June 1942: betrayed by 1 of their own team, 7 Czechoslovak parachutists involved in the assassination of Reinhard Heydrich are besieged in the orthodox church of Saints Cyril & Methodius in Prague. All die or commit suicide

Interesting choice of words by Theil- “Reformation” that was about forcing conformity/homogeneity in Christianity. It was bloody too and followed by the CounterReformation

The counterreformation to the New Historians, so to speak, is that the Nakba happened but was not preplanned before Plan Dalet; the evidence Morris used to argue it was preplanned turned out to be based on missing a negative in Ben Gurion's chicken scratch, and Morris conceded the error.
