A problem with memorialising communist tyranny is that is difficult to memorialise certain things. For example the Czechoslovak secret police StB specialised in "denial of social life". If you were targetted by the regime, a police officer would visibly follow you around, EVERYWHERE.

As popular as this narrative is, I don't like it. It pins all the blame on Stalin. I remember how shocked I was when I learned Czechoslovak communist leaders proclaimed in central committee meetings that "The Holocaust was the only good thing the Nazis did, because it resolved the national question"
They were very fortunate Stalin died when he did, because all the signs pointed to his gearing up for a Nazi-style pogrom against Jews in the USSR and satellites under the pretext of their being "rootless cosmopolitans" in league with capitalism.

🤝🏻 In Ukraine, serial production of 120 mm ammunition for modern Western tanks — the Abrams and Leopard 2 — has been established.
The company Ukrainian Armor said this became possible thanks to the transfer of technological documentation from the Czech Czechoslovak Group.

This btw is a reason why so many Czechoslovak dissidents became alcoholics. Their lives were in effect reduced to sitting at home alone and drinking. Many committed suicide. And the question faced in the aftermaph is how on earth do you even memorialise this?

Congratulations to my dear friend Gregor Valentovic on his debut film Nepela, out in cinemas this week. A powerful story of a Czechoslovak figure skater and the 1972 Olympic champion whose personal fight for freedom collided with the brutal wall of totalitarianism. And a cinematic masterpiece.

Noting once again how remarkable that near the same patterns were described and challenged by Czechoslovak leftists in the 70s, following the 1968 Soviet occupation of Czechoslovakia. And yet toward Europe’s East the learning curve on the Western left has remained almost flat for over 50 yrs now (!)

Me: google "underdog quote Casablanca"
Google AI overview: "While there is no actual 'underdog' quote in the movie, Bulgarian resistance leader Victor Laszlo..."
Czechoslovak resistance leader Victor Laszlo: "Isn't it strange that you always happen to be fighting on the side of the underdog?"

One thing I learned when studying how Czechoslovakia collapsed into communist tyranny was a split that occurred in the Czechoslovak left during the Nazi occupation. As part of the Molotov Ribbentrop pact, Stalin forbade European communists to engage in armed resistance against Nazi occupation.
