Great news for Cornwall: real progress on devolution, recognition for Kernewek, and strong Institute of Cornish Studies research and teamwork driving positive change for our future! Cornwall is not going to be forced into a Devonwall Mayoral Devolution deal!

This would then mean that other public services could be aligned to a Devonwall structure, marginalising the Cornish voice and inevitably meaning jobs and decision making powers are centralised in Devon

Very reassuring news this morning. Good to hear that the new SW Region/Devonwall monstrosity is opposed by all Cornish MPs. This kind of project has been tested in the past with the SWRDA and across Europe, always with disastrous results. It will favour cities vs rural & prop up x-right. #Kernow2025

Excellent news for Kernow today. Devolution to come and an absolute guarantee of no 'Devonwall' nonsense in the future.

"No to Devonwall or any #Southwest thing disrespecting the integrity of Cornwall!" says Cllr Dick Cole. #MebyonKernow will defend #Cornwall against any risk of seeing Cornish democracy and decision-making diluted into SW England. "The current offer for devolution for Kernow is not even third rate".

May I politely point out that Cornwall, Britain’s fifth nation, has not been allowed a parliament and this oppressive Labour government is trying to force it into an assembly with Devon (dubbed ‘Devonwall’) against the will of the majority. It would be great to have PR, but for a Cornish assembly.

Rumours of proposals for a Devonwall mayor are not helped by ambiguity from politicians in Cornwall.

It's great the Government recognises the importance of devolution to the economy.

But the way this is currently happening outside the big cities risks creating a scrambled map out in the shires. "Devonwall" and "Heart of Wessex" aren't just odd, they aren't economic geographies.

In an answer to North Cornwall MP Ben Maguire, @jimmcmahon.co.uk made it clear that the government is still intent on bullying Cornwall into accepting a Devonwall Mayor if it wants devolution, despite Wales and Scotland not being subject to such demands.

Tone deaf, intransigent, discriminatory.

All the more reason for Cornwall having its own assembly, independent from Devon: its problems are different and so its solutions aren’t the one size fits all Devonwall.

But I'm guessing hasn't (yet) ruled out a Devonwall mayor?

A Devonwall Mayor would be the opposite of devolution - it would take power away from Cornish people and hand it to politicians in Devon.
November 25, 2024 at 12:34 PM
Calling for Wales to be run from Birmingham would be a denial of Welsh nationhood.

Similarly, any politician that supports the idea of a Devonwall Mayor is also denying Cornish national minority status and our right as a nation to determine our own affairs.
A Devonwall Mayor would be largely voted in by Devon, and a Combined Authority would be dominated by Devon politicians.

As a national minority, we have the right to make our own decisions over Cornish language, heritage, culture and economic rights. We won't be run from Devon.

Big puff-piece for the #PlymouthUK & SouthDevon #Freeport on #BBCtv #SpotlightSouthWest... No comment from local MPs.
Then moved on to an item on #Devonwall...
It's the most I've seen from a local source...

I am at Lys #Kernow today with fellow Mebyon Kernow candidates and councillors to discuss incoming elections. Exciting time to see how we can turn things around next May to defend #Cornwall, fight for more powers in planning, more funding for public services and stop SW mayor/Devonwall! #Kernow2025

Drive that bottom line down a bit and make the entire South Coast form the Devonwall Panhandle.

The proposed Devonwall seat was a *huge* deal when I was down there!
September 29, 2025 at 3:57 PM
Wouldn't it be fantastic if Kernow became tory-free totally! It seems unlikely but they will definitely lose their majority. With the Labour government's proposal to subjugate Kernow under Devonwall the Labour candidates may take a battering ... It will be an interesting year ... in many ways!
December 27, 2024 at 11:45 PM
This is an unrealistic result as the Lib Dems will probably remove the Tories from Devonwall and then proceed to grab more of the South.
