#Hemochromatosis
In the case of hemochromatosis, the iron is there but not used. Bloodletting is a treatment to this day.

I suspect some women experience chlorosis with period-related iron loss.

You can have some of my ferritin if you want. Mine is always high to the point they tested me for hemochromatosis (I didn’t have it.)

It's possible the mental health problems aren't wholly related to actually having iron overload. It's really not clear what's going on, there's just a correlation. There are some things associated with hemochromatosis you get even without high iron (like an unusual rate of benign giant cell tumors).

The brain is the one that at this stage seems most likely to have experienced damage, but it's not really possible to figure out what's unrelated to hemochromatosis and what's not. They don't know why but people with hemochromatosis have an elevated rate of mental health issues and I have bad OCD. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Sadly it brings up that doctors verified a case where a young man with undiagnosed hemochromatosis probably caused his own death by taking quite a bit of vitamin C for a year (which increases iron uptake) until his iron levels were so high it severely damaged his heart and he died.

I'm reading Oxygen by Nick Lane and it actually has a section that talks about hereditary hemochromatosis, the genetic disease I have. That was very unexpected, I mean it's not even primarily a book about humans and nobody ever talks about hemochromatosis.

I used to be super iron-y and a doctor had me double-checked for hemochromatosis just in case, but 5 pregnancies cured me of that issue.

I don't officially have hemochromatosis (that one lady on Doc Martin had it!) but I do have to be careful about my iron consumption, which my body reminds me of by giving me horrible abdominal pain when I eat high-iron foods

my fibromyalgia could explain this. I'm also extremely dizzy and nauseous that's just menieres.

but neither of these explain the alopecia which has be wondering if this is hemochromatosis or perhaps I got a false negative when tested in the past for Lupus or Lyme

Which needs to happen in hemochromatosis patients

Two new test results just popped in MyChart. Neither of which I knew were ordered. One just says "Hemochromatosis Mutation" and nothing else, I have no idea what that means. I know I HAVE Hemochromatosis, but I don't know what "Mutation" means in this context.

The other? Well... Should have seen⤵️

I wish I could borrow that. I have hemochromatosis. It'd be perfect to take the excess iron and reinforce my body with it, instead of my organs
January 21, 2026 at 5:38 AM
looks like alopecia to me

either it's stress or it's hemochromatosis (I am 30, scottish/irish and I was taking iron tablets and I think my grandfather had it)
January 21, 2026 at 1:04 AM
my hair is falling out lmao

how funny would it be if I had hemochromatosis as well as fibromyalgia and menieres

whenver i read the hemochromatosis fb group i thank god i live in a city with excellent medical care because some of the nonsense i hear is... scary.

Thank you, I appreciate it. I have a few health issues but the one that's been giving me troubles is hemochromatosis. Take care and have a good weekend! ❤️

Ah sorry you pass out! And sorry about your grandma! I hope she's okay. I have passed out giving blood too, actually. But I don't have a choice. I have to give because I have hemochromatosis and it's the only way to get rid of iron buildup in my body. Very medieval! The upside is getting to donate.

Btw I get iron overload because I have hemochromatosis. If you are dragging, I wouldn’t worry that it’s your issue! (But it’s always a good idea to get your iron checked if you’re tired because you could be anemic. Also good to check thyroid levels—another issue that can sneak up on you.) ❤️
