All cats trace back ~25–30M yrs to Proailurus (pro-AY-luh-rus), the first true cat (Felidae) 🐾

One branch became the extinct sabertooths (Machairodontinae – mah-KAI-roh-DON-tin-ee) 🦷: massive hunters like Smilodon and Homotherium, and lesser-known Lokotunjailurus.

large cats: Pantherinae (lions, tigers, jaguars, leopards, clouded leopards, snow leopards)

small cats: Felinae (all other living cats, including the physically large cheetahs and cougars)

saber-toothed cats: Machairodontinae (the only saber-toothed cats that are actually true cats)

Homotherium belongs to the cat subfamily Machairodontinae, which split from the lineage of all living cats about 20 million years ago. Another well-known Machairodont is Smilodon, the saber-toothed cat (not a tiger!)

xenosmilus' name is derived from greek, and translates to 'strange knife', a tribute to its unusual blend of ostensibly taxonomically disparate traits and of course its sabre-teeth, iconic to machairodontinae

you mean smilodon?
ok well smilodon belongs to a subfamily of felids called the machairodontinae - the sabre-toothed cats - that aren't related to pantherines (such as tigers). there were three species of smilodon that ranged from north to south america

machairodontinae -- from Ancient Greek for 'sword tooth', which makes sense

What Fabrini was thinking when he coined Homotherium, though, I have no idea.
