World War II and beyond. Prior to the onset of World War II, Max von Laue and James Franck had sent their gold Nobel Prize medals to Denmark to keep them from being confiscated by the Nazis. After the Nazi invasion of Denmark this placed them in danger; it was illegal at the time to send gold out of Germany, and were it discovered that Laue and Franck had done so, they could have faced prosecution. To prevent this, de Hevesy concealed the medals by dissolving them in aqua regia and placing the resulting solution on a shelf in his laboratory at the Niels Bohr Institute in Copenhagen. After the war, he returned to find the solution undisturbed and precipitated the gold out of the acid. The Nobel Society then recast the medals using the recovered gold and returned them to the two laureates. This is your reminder that Hungarian-Jewish scientist George de Hevesy dissolved two Nobel Prizes in aqua regia to keep them out of the hands of the Nazis.

He then left the dissolved solution on his shelf and fled to Sweden.

Most solid gold is elemental gold, it’s a “noble metal.” It takes a potent substance to dissolve, but an easily-enough acquired one (aqua regia, as noted)

aqua regia is a mix of nitric acid and hydrochloric acid (1 molecule of nitric acid to 3 of hydrochloric acid, ideally) and is one of the only solvents that can attack and dissolve nonreactive metals like gold and the platinum group metals

Aqua regia is a mix of hydrochloric acid and nitric acid. It is used extensively for rock sample analysis in the mining and exploration industry, as mentioned for gold but also other metals as well.

Max von Laue and James Franck, but they weren't Peace Prizes, they were for Physics.

They dissolved them in two separate solutions of aqua regia to hide them from the nazis. It worked. After the war, they reversed the chemistry and were able to get the medals re-cast.
