#English It is no longer shocking to me to have confirmation from time to time that when I develop some theory about the origin of the dog, it is confirmed sooner or later by new studies. In recent years, research on the origin and spread of dogs has revealed fascinating information about the antiquity of the first dogs to arrive in America. A recently published study (François Lanoë et al. ,Late Pleistocene onset of mutualistic human/canid (Canis spp.) relationships in subarctic Alaska.Sci. Adv.10,eads1335(2024)) has provided genetic and morphological evidence confirming the existence of ancient canids in America, identifiable as Canis familiaris, in a period between 12,000 and 13,000 years ago. These dogs, found at archaeological sites, show similarities to domestic dog lineages, but do not align with any known clade of modern dogs, suggesting that they represent a unique evolutionary diversity. Previous genetic analysis has revealed that some specimens, such as the 36,500-year-old Goyet dog, are now considered sister lineages to the lineage that led to the modern dog. This indicates that ancient dogs had distinctive characteristics and their domestication occurred in different contexts than modern dogs. Furthermore, canids found in America do not show direct links to modern European breeds, suggesting they may have followed unique migration paths and developed symbiotic relationships with local human populations. These findings support the theory of dogs were the first domesticated animals to migrate with humans to the New World, contributing to their survival and adaptation in different environments. The variety of diets and behaviors observed in these ancient canids reflects a complex interaction with humans, which led to a mutualistic system characteristic of northern latitudes. Brother b&w was our only printer at a dusty uranium mine in the subarctic. It endured -50C and 35C and never ever failed. It was going for near a decade when I left for another job
