Ami has a small smile, brown eyes, thin eyebrows, and a little dot shaped birthmark under each eye. She is dressed in a pink heart shaped sleeveless top with straps that tie behind their neck. The top has white lace trim, large magenta roses sewn along the edge of the top below the lace edge, and a magenta bow in the upper center of the top. I’m sure, Suzette, but considering that about 56% of Brunswick’s population is African American and 9% Hispanic, their absence was striking. In a crowd of roughly 400–500 people, I saw maybe 10 Black attendees and about 5 Latinx. Young people were also noticeably scarce.

"Le ménage de Madame Sylvain" est un livre dont j'ai fait une fiche de lecture sur le blog. Rédigé au tout début du XXème siècle (1908 max), il décrit les journées et routines de Madame Sylvain qui a trois enfants. Elle vit à la campagne et son mari Sylvain est agriculteur. Tu sais quoi ? Je ne me souviens même plus de son prénom, à Madame Sylvain. (Suzette, c’est Suzette, il m’aura fallu un moment). Elle s’occupe de sa famille depuis que sa mère a rejoint le Grand Rien et les lectrices (au féminin, faut pas déconner) la suivent au fil de sa vie et des romans. Elle travaille à la maison, elle a son potager, sa basse cour. Poussières, repas, maladies, elle nous explique tout dans ce qui, en réalité, est un manuel scolaire romancé qui a été lu par des milliers d'écolières pendant des décennies. Et tu sais quoi ? Elle apprend à sa fille de 6 ans à être une ménagère, dans ce livre. Surtout, en termes de repos et de loisirs, elle a que dalle, elle passe sa journée à nettoyer, ranger, faire à manger, s'occuper de tout et de tout le monde, ses journées excédant de loin les 16h. Mais elle le fait toujours avec sourire et bienveillance, endurant les assauts de la vie avec un courage inébranlable. Dans ce contexte-là, l'éducation de ses enfants passait aussi par Ludivine, la voisine et domestique. Que tu bosses dans le Dehors ou que tu sois mère au foyer, en gros, c'est la même.
