#TransLink's
Sometimes you come across a stat that stops you in your tracks. Today I learned that TransLink's 555 has the 8th highest rate of boardings per hour, which is mindblowing.

Why?

Highway express routes like this aren't supposed to do well on that metric. They usually don't have a lot of ons and offs

The motions asks staff to look at restrictions at intersections with:
1) Leading pedestrian intervals
2) Bike lanes, MUPs, greenways
3) Fully signalized intersections with high pedestrian/cyclist injury rates
4) The above on Translink's Major Road Network

To improve the resiliency of bus services, TransLink is doubling the use of winter tires, expanding to 70 per cent of the bus fleet.

New storage for the historic fleet is somewhere in Langley, I'm not even sure exactly where, I guess there. It was the closest warehouse big enough within Translink's budget. But it means a long way to tow the trolleys for any use... expand trolley buses to Langley?

Translink's bus system is really remarkable. Fantastic frequency + coverage (tho' span of service sometimes falls short). The express buses (R3, R4, R5, 99 B-Line) stop at major intersections/stations; you can tap on with a credit card; and they're clean, with great signage.

Replacing the surface parking lots with more intensive uses will improve the profitability of the island. Aside from that, the funding gap will need to be closed the same as Translink's was, squeeze the involved parties for a bit more cash, and more gov't funding. More housing would help too

Why are TransLink's live schedules so terrible? I get there were problems with buses today, but that doesn't explain live updates for non-existent buses.

There were definitely some bumps in TransLink's Compass rollout a decade ago, but I think at this point it's pretty universally viewed as a successful project.

Only about half of the operating costs and none of the capital costs of highways in BC are covered by gas taxes. Only about a quarter of TransLink's (public transport in Metro Vancouver) revenue is from fares and only about a third of BC Transit's (transit in the rest of BC) revenue is from fares.
April 22, 2025 at 2:19 AM
I think people are stretching reasonable claims/stats beyond their scope.

Years ago there was an analysis that Translink's new Compass Card fare gates cost substantially more than the lost revenue from fare evasion, and people turned that into fare collection costs outweighing fare revenue.
July 10, 2025 at 6:36 AM
So with fares cut back to 1 zone levels, if you’re in Translink’s office in Sapperton, and you’re asked to chose to fund a dinky ferry with 5 minutes headways thought to be used mostly by tourists and paying for more service hours in a growing neighbourhood in Langley what are you going to pick?

“Ottawa pledges $1.5 billion over 10 years for Metro Vancouver transit”: nice to see the government investing in transit around the country. I’m sure we’d all love more public scrutiny of TransLink’s finances, but it’s also nice to not see the press frame this as a “loss”. This is investment.

Vancouver doesn't pay even close to that for the entire rail system including the West Coast Express, SkyTrain and TransLink's bus service. 1.76 million trips are predicted (Stantec/Modus) based on todays numbers rising to well over 4 million by 2041 so heavily used by islanders.

I don't see any reason why #Kamloops can't just copy TransLink's best practices and get an AT network built quickly and cheaply like other municipalities in BC.
