Transit polls well. We use that popularity to push for more reliable and abundant transit. Let's make it better than driving. I'm in Vancouver - unceded xʷməθkʷəy̓əm, Sḵwx̱wú7mesh, and səlilwətaɬ land. Executive Director of @movementyvr.bsky.social

Here's a starter pack of all the transit rider groups that have popped up so far on BlueSky. Reply if I've missed a group!

This is fascinating! Ottawa appears to have way more rural than anyone else in its class (which is exactly where I grew up). Is that because of where they chose to draw the regional boundaries or is there something else at play? Is it perversely because of the Greenbelt?

A Redditor made a graph of the percent of population of US and Canada metro areas over 1 million that live in a given density. When they ordered them by average density the lowest ranked Canadian metro area, Edmonton, was ranked 14th between Miami and Washington. 6 of the top 15 were Canadian metros

15 currently installed & 20 more will be installed & activated over the coming months. Including another display.

Palmerston/Bloor should be approaching One Million people cycling so far this year in the coming weeks. 💥

We verify this data with a 2nd counting source 2x/yr before we release it.

Did you know Toronto has 15 permanent bicycle counters around the city? I have created a portal that should be updated monthly when the city updates their open data. It's live now at: observingthecity.ca

A collection of bikes on a rack along the sidewalk. One has red flowers in its basket. Beyond the sidewalk is a little bit of grass and then a four storey apartment building painted two shades of orange. Two palm trees flank the orange staircase leading up to a big wood and glass door.

One of the issues I've been seeing with online urbanism is an over-reliance on "vibes" to determine funding priorities

No, we should not replace a bus with a streetcar solely because "only streetcars give off walkability vibes"

That's how you kill an underfunded transit system

As we gear up for Transit’s Next Top Funding Model, we’re thrilled to launch the Movement Book Club!

Our first read will be When Driving Is Not an Option by our keynote speaker Anna Zivarts and we’ll be diving into her book together before she joins us on Nov 14!

A book titled "When Driving Is Not An Option" by Anna Letitia Zivarts is featured with illustrations of people at a bus stop, the Movement logo, and a circular photo labelled "Keynote Speaker" for an event called "Transit’s Next Top Funding Model."

Our first #GoByTransitWeekYVR in Metro Vancouver was such a hit! We had a blast celebrating transit riders and showing politicians the need for better transit. We thank the 14 political figures all across the political spectrum, and levels of government who joined us in celebrating GoByTransitWeek.

Even cheaper oil sources like Saudi Arabia are aggressively diversifying. We need to tell that story more in Canada. Danielle Smith wants Canada's economy to look like Alberta's and it's a trap.

Demand will drop and the only places left pumping oil will be the ones doing it cheaper than us.

“We assume that car use is an incompressible liquid that must be routed somewhere. But it’s more more like a gas that fills whatever space it is given.”

This is how cheap our solar could be if we didn’t tax it like cigarettes

This system would cost over $30k in Canada vs $8500 in Australia

If we could rustle up the $500m USD/year he's talking about, would I spend it on free transit? When you ask riders, the #1 thing they want is more frequent, faster, and more reliable service. I would spend it on that. That said, we need a GENEROUS low-income fare pass, most other cities have one.

Although we disagree with the conclusions from SDOT's traffic study, its traffic counts were very eye-opening:
• Over 3 times as many people use Denny Way to access areas east of I-5 than to access I-5 S
• Of the people continuing east, 35% do so in a car, 34% in a Route 8 bus, and 31% on foot

SDOT has updated their post about Denny Way bus lanes and have uploaded the full traffic study, which you can read below.

In short, it's a 516 page document that does not mention mode shift or alternate routing a single time.

Unfortunately those are pretty small potatoes in the context of the transit budget. Need more taxes!
