the most gender euphoria i have experienced recently is from this conservative reply guy affirming my nonbinary-ness

love an unexpected ally
it's amazing to see so many people who care about improving the streetcar system! the passion in toronto transit advocacy gives me life.

it was very fun to be part of this, chatting with riders about their experiences+ideas (including meeting some of you irl for the first time) & being on the panel
We had an incredible Streetcar Summit on Sunday! Thank you to the over 200 people who joined us to share their experiences riding the streetcar and what needs to be done to improve the system.

This is just the beginning! Stay tuned for our push for the world-class streetcar system we deserve 🚋✨

2019 service levels was recently restored on line 2, & I'm loving it.

as some who works wonky hours (late morning to evenings and nights), having 2-4 minute wait times all day for the subway has saved me a lot of time.

I haven't had to wait more than 5 min for a train on line 2 these past 2 weeks

my read on it is that US streetcar revival had less to do with transportation planning and more with downtown revitalization & real estate development.

canadian city centres were never as hollowed-out and so the desire wasn't ever there. nor was a federal transit funding program like the US had.
When the US was swept with the new-streetcars-mixed-with-traffic fad in the 00s, Canada didn’t build a single one. They only built rail in exclusive lanes.

I wonder if that’s because most educated Canadians have visited Toronto and experienced its old streetcar lines.

Line 6 Finch West LRT is finally opening on December 7! After 4 years of delay, the new light rail will open and is expected to serve 40,000 transit riders.

But wait...where's Line 5, the Eglinton Crosstown?

Line 1, 2, 4, & 6? What is counting?

very funny that metrolinx leaked the December 7 opening date weeks ago, coincidentally around when they handed it over to the TTC. this opening date has truly been a hot potato between metrolinx and the TTC.

took until today for the TTC to confirm this opening date!

most municipalities first move here would be to remove the bus stop rather than work towards making the crossing safer.

in toronto, our so-called "vision zero" program has pushed to remove TTC stops like this and hinder accessibility instead of making arterial roads safer
:(
This is an absolutely typical intersection for a pedestrian fatality, and where two people have been killed in a year.

-5 lane arterial
-No marked crosswalk or crossing signal
-No median refuge
-Long distances to signalized crosswalks (600' to E, 850't to W)
-Critically, bus stops on both sides

You wanna know what’s safer, more affordable, better for the climate, and more space-efficient than a driverless car?

A bus.
Elon is a bullshit artist but some people are letting negative polarization rewrite their brain to become against objectively good things that he has unfortunately branded himself as being associated with. Actually working self driving cars are obviously good and will likely save many lives.

my running theory is that when a region has good enough transit to break 20% mode share, even the transit lines that are 'bad' on paper will still get ridership

everytime i've ridden WCE it's been fully seated from waterfront!

pretty cool seeing the length of REM across the whole urban area.

now you can catch a metro from one edge of the urban area to the opposite edge, 50 km away.

you can walk to the countryside from both deux montagnes and brossard and visit the cows on either end 🐄
the new rem branch is now visible on google maps.

as a passion project, nick andert's long, well-produced, meticulously complete videos dedicated to local transit advocacy and discussion are so impressive. i've never lived in LA, but i'm compelled to watch each one.

and i'm just about sold on this vision for vermont avenue!

we need to put to rest the idea that the mass suburbanization of the US was inevitably natural, and admit that americans only seek out this lifestyle because the US has heavily subsidized it over the last century to attainability for a sizeable population, to the benefit of certain industries.
Right, this is true, but the OVERWHELMING evidence of the past 100 years of American life is that vastly more people want space and a car than a smaller unit and a car-free lifestyle. This is mostly why the suburban share of US population has grown relentlessly for the entire 20th and 21st century
Some people put a premium on space in my experience, others put a premium on not having to have a car and not being isolated out in the suburbs

with a substantial portion of REM is complete, montréal/quebec/canada should consider blowing all their money+energy on the one much-needed metro line that would 'complete' the city's metro network for the foreseeable future.

bring back the pink line!
if we're going to be planning an entirely underground line, might as well build the most direct, higher capacity line that directly intercepts the densest neighbourhoods in the northeast.

phase 1 from downtown to the blue line, phase 2 to montréal nord

a few pictures from the second day of celebrations for the extension of the rem. cdpq infra built 50 km of rapid transit in less than 8 years and at a cost of 128 million dollars per km. and there’s more to come!
November 17, 2025 at 3:12 AM
since REM opened this weekend, this is all i can think about.

toronto has been building a smaller, 'lower-order' transit project that costs significantly more and is taking twice as long to complete 🫠

this is an insane statistic for what is the fastest growing city and metropolitan area in north america. that growth isn't actually realized in most of the city.

it's usually places with tons of renters and density already that see the brunt of hyperfocused growth, & the consequences (displacement)
Almost everywhere in the City of Toronto has fewer people that it did 50 years ago

very cool system, but it’s always seemed a bizarre choice that the rem is not identified as part of the metro system, even moreso now that it’s expanded. i know that rem is legally, technically its own thing but come on: it’s really just more metro!
the biggest section of the REM (and imo the most important phase) opened today, basically extending a highway-median suburban branch into a full-fledged 50 km north-south metro across the montreal region

montreal now has a 119-kilometre metro system with 87 stations, by far the largest in canada!
