Liquor store clerk: I’m gonna need to see some age verification

Me: Prior to V.90 there were two incompatible standards for 56K modems. USRobotics pushed their own “X2”, while Lucent and Rockwell pushed the confusingly named “KFlex”

Liquor store clerk: enjoy your purchase.

Eu no bluesky estou me sentindo adolescente novamente, vendo as fotos carregarem devagarinho, bem como era no meu antigo USRobotics de 56k.

Took some time, but I finally managed to connect to a dial-up BBS using an old USRobotics modem, a serial to USB adapter, Linksys VoIP ATA and PuTTY.

Ha the nice sound of the modems talking to each other!

What good timing, mine just arrived! I better get on-line!

It’s never too late to send out an invite when you have a modem.

Hey, there's more ancient (relatively) tech still out there in the field than a lot of folks realize

I literally had eyes & hands on a powered up, connected, functioning 56K USRobotics *audio modem* today, linking up RF transponders on a T1 line installed in 2008

I shit you not, in production!

28.8kbsp for my USRobotics, BB in Hull. Them were the days.

My campus had USRobotics Total Control dialup servers. They were fed by PRIs, so 24 lines per PRI, digital so it did 56K.

You could also dial in with an ISDN modem and get a symmetric 64kbps connection.

As a nerdy heavy dialup user I often helped them beta test new firmware and the X2 56K code.

14400 Bit/s, wohlgemerkt! Damit war es möglich, EIN (1!) Megabyte - genauer 1,08MB - in rasanten 10 Minuten zu übertragen! (1/4)

I read where, due to traffic, more than 80% of StarLink customers do not have internet speeds high enough to be called broadband. Lucky they still have their USRobotics dial-up modem. 14.4kbps

that's a really good modem. i love USRobotics products. i also used Zooms. it would be nice to retrofit current equipment to make that modem sound occasionally. just sayin'

I've lately been trying to digitise old stuff. I started with family documents (recipes, notes, etc.) and photos and I've now moved to old computer stuff (driver CDs, demos, etc.)

Diamond Multimedia? Sound Blaster AWE 64. USRobotics 33.6 Kbps? Ulead PhotoImpact? Gosh. The memories! 🥹
