More previz for the Carmen part of my Beyond Queer doco.

My collaborators were initially sceptical, but I think they've all been won over by the state-of-the-art AI.

I realized that that generative AI removes that thread entirely. Concept, previz, lookdev, final work, it's all the interweaving of the threads of the individual artists. It's inefficient, difficult, expensive, and time consuming. And it's collaborative art.

Generative AI is inimical to art.

In Godzilla: The Art of Destruction, director Gareth Edwards recalls a flashback scene in Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla where the original Godzilla is disintegrated by the Oxygen Destroyer. This scene is often mistaken for CGI and was actually made using a partial replica of the ShodaiGoji suit.

Video games are trying to normalize using Ai art for previz and basic assets for games and then replace them later by hiring real artists. It's just a setup for when they won't have to hire artists at all if people don't push back.

I personally feel that while AI art is awful re: copyright infringement (AI techbros training) as well as high velocity remix/gen somewhat cheapening effort and output, it is perfect for quick ideation/previz. For me the value of art is in process and I don’t respect AI art on its execution

Sprites workflow in 2D and 3D have been there for a while but while 3D art is somewhat standardized, 2D is not as much and if you're a beginner there's a lot of info that can be missed, so the Discord is a good safety net
There's also improvements like sprite previz which should help solo discovery!

All I hope is that some people will continue to use the old methods, such as storyboarding, which has sometimes continued despite the rise of animatics and previz, so that I still have art to share and celebrate. 🤞

This one lived another generation, too. Here it is again in some of the first bespoke Star Citizen concept art! I remember we did a previz of this environment very very early, too.

Huh, Waititi's version dead in the water. I wish they would release any art made in preproduction for this shit. The graveyard of preproduction art that I'll never see--the scripts--the previz--oh, my nerdy little heart hurts just thinking about it.

Started with a lidar scan of the stairwell, modeled out some basic geometry… then made some frames at the right sizes so I could noodle with the arrangement until I was happy with it.

Pre-Pro involves writing, previz (hiring modelers, animators, developers), a lot of concept art, project planning and forecasting, the list goes on.

And getting approval from executives for ALL of it is also a major time sync. So "reshoots" (re-writes, remodels, replanning) happen a lot as well

Hey! I was the ILM Previz Supervisor and Assistant VFX Art Director on Space Cowboys! Very fun show, and Eastwood really used ILM as collaborators on the space sequences. I got to design several parts of the Ikon satellite, too...and then the model shop made it better than what I designed! 😃
