My ride to work this morning
February 7, 2026 at 5:19 AM
It’s not unusual for my wife and I to drive to SF together to see a show, and afterwords I take BART and Baywheels home, while she stays in the city for late night dancing, or for her to drive to SF for a workshop, I take BART to meet her in Oakland for a dance, and then we drive home together.

In 2023 I visited every single BayWheels bike share station in San Francisco. In 2024 I visited every station in the East Bay and San Jose.

The system has added new stations since then; so today I’m going to be visiting all the new ones in SF and Daly City.

I did! I was looking for a BayWheels station, though 😅

Small details make a huge difference in bikeshare. BayWheels recently added locks to their newer e-bike model, which now means those trips can end outside of docks. That benefit for riders is already paying off - outside Caltrain:

Think it's time we move the BayWheels station off of the 16th St Mission Plaza. The experience of starting and ending trips there is incredibly unpleasant (and unsanitary), and placing the dock on the street nearby would be a huge improvement. @baywheels.bsky.social @bart.gov

True, but NYC’s Citi Bike growth alone eclipses BayWheels’ total ridership!

This biker was me last week. I took a Baywheels to the chess tables, only to find they removed the bike rack on Haste. The closest one was two blocks south, so I rode back along that exact spot. If there were bike lanes or south side telegraph was car-free, this man would be alive. Whose streets?

I was on a Baywheels e-bike just now in a bike lane behind an e-scooter, a skateboard, and a traditional bike. Looked like a scene out of a Richard Scarry book about sustainable transportation.

First BayWheels station directly on the lakeside path at Lake Merritt. Let's hope this can drive some ridership and lead to some rebalancing in Oakland.

Thrilled to see another BayWheels dock opened up at the 4th and King Caltrain station

New BayWheels bike share stations in Emeryville (Vallejo & 66th St, one block from the greenway) and Oakland (Brooklyn Ave & Lakeshore, across from the upcoming Lakeshore cycletrack).

It will be interesting to see how this plays out, and if BayWheels moves bikes back to docks if they aren't being used. Forcing use of docks has historically helped reduce sidewalk clutter.

And there's the BayWheels announcement

More and more of BayWheels' e-bikes now have the lock-to cable, allowing trips to be ended outside of docks.

the baywheels docks at berkely bart stations are some of if not the most used in the entire system(bart bikeshare stations)

That’s awful! Those connections should be timed. Good thing you got a BayWheels.
October 26, 2025 at 5:25 AM
Also why are there no baywheels stations on campus?!

Cool BayWheels visualization tool: www.flowmap.blue/1hMAi5M1eB6V...

@markhumbert.bsky.social we need a bike lane on College.

Interesting tidbit I noticed last time I opened the BayWheels app, the cable locks are coming back on all e-bikes

Board member asks if upgraded Clipper cards will continue to work to unlock Baywheels. The answer is yes.

In sprawling places like much of the US, bicycles are a fantastic compliment to transit for car free mobility.

I’m excited that BayWheels and SJ have added a bikeshare dock just outside the faregates of Berryessa/North San Jose BART Station, supplementing the dock a 7 minute walk from the station.
