Book 3 is Honeyeater by Kathleen Jennings. This is a gothic story set in subtropical Australia

Liked: Little ghost stories between chapters, lush descriptions of the creek and Wren house, Grace's roses

Disliked: pacing felt uneven. Book overall is slow paced then rapidly picks up at the end

@alan678.bsky.social has chosen #BirdOfTheDay theme as #Solitude. Here's a poor, lonely Brown Honeyeater (Lichmera indistincta) with Eric Carmen's classic "All by myself" at Oxley Creek Common.

Today’s #BirdOfTheDay theme chosen by @alan678.bsky.social is #Solitude open to interpretation. The alt is #gardenbirds

Let me introduce to you the Olive-backed female Sunbird. She is enjoying her solitude immensely. The male is another of those showoffs.

They are a type of honeyeater. Beautiful birds. There are 4 other wattle bird species but only the red and yellow ones have visible wattles (that colour match their name :)

New Holland Honeyeater (Phylidonyris novaehollandiae, Noongar: Tjoodik) during a hard day's work pollinating. These honeyeaters primarily feed on nectar from flowers, and will aggressively defend their food sources from rivals.

A New Holland Honeyeater is a regular morning visitor to our daughters garden in Chiltern, Vic. It’s feeding on Banksia flowers and is very active and quite elusive #birdsseenin2026 #australianbirds

Just popped outside to get the bins in. Waited for a honeyeater to finish having a drink from our birdbath. He needed it in this weather. Like a furnace out there with the wind.

I’m not really a ranker of things, so I’m reluctant to make Best Of lists, but these were some of the books I read in 2025 that I’m still thinking about:

Eastern #Spinebills are endemic to #australia. They are nectar feeders and important pollinators. They hover like hummingbirds, using their elongated curved bill to access nectar.

A very welcome visitor to my garden.
